Puerto Maldonado is a jungle town in south-eastern Peru, and a centre for eco-tourism. Served by a number of domestic and international flights, it features a long runway to handle most types of aircraft. Because of its strategic location, the airfield is used by the Peruvian police and US Department of State for counter-drugs operations.
Beware, plane spotting is neither understood nor appreciated in Peru.
The airport has a single north-south runway. The civil terminal can be found to the north-east side, whereas the police compound is located on the south-west side of the airfield. As can be expected in Peru, the airport is fenced-off by a wall.
Unless you arrive by boat, the airport is your most likely point of entry to the region. The civil terminal is found just west of the town of Puerto Maldonado.
