General

One of the busiest airports in the Caribbean, San Juan, often referred to as LMM or SJU, is the international gateway to Puerto Rico and its thriving capital San Juan. US airlines, charters, propliners, bizprops as well as a load of private aircraft call San Juan home. The military part of the airfield is known as Muñiz ANGB.

Layout

San Juan has two runways nowadays in a V-shape, with runway 8/26 to the north of the terminal area, and runway 10/28 to its south. The thresholds of both runways are near lagoons, which makes access somewhat complicated, although some good spots can be found. Generally, the western aprons are used for passenger traffic. The south eastern part of the airport is the cargo area, whereas Muñiz ANGB can be found in the north eastern corner, not visible from outside. Propliners are located near the mid-airfield taxiway that connects both runways.

Getting There

San Juan airport is located about 10kms east of the city's centre. It can easily be reached by car by taking highway 22 west to Carolina and is basically located at the east end of highway 17. The airport is clearly signposted around San Juan.

Around the Airport

1Approach 8 south side & north western aprons

The best known place for aircraft enthusiasts at San Juan used to be the Aeropark. However the restaurant has been closed for a number of years and even the parking lot is not accessible anymore. Security will send you away.

2Approaches 8 & 10 south side

A fine alternative to spot 1 is can be found in Laguna Gardens. Coming from the airport, head south on 26 to Carolina and immediately take exit 8B, which runs parallel to the highway. You will end up at the parking lot of a shopping mall, recognizable from its Super Max supermarket. The mall also has a Subway restaurant and a cash dispenser so you can make yourself comfortable here. Just park your car with the front the highway and enjoy the view. Despite the highway between the parking lot and the airport, great views can be had from here. Aircraft approaching runway 10 can be seen quite late, so keep your camera ready at all times, or bring yourself a scanner. Large aircraft on finals for runway 8 can be caught with 300mm.

3Aprons east side

Not so much for the photographers, but certainly for the number crunchers, spot 3 provides good value. But don't stay around too long at the fence with a camera as security will send you away here also. Driving on highway 26 south to Carolina, take the Muñiz ANGB exit, which is clearly signposted. Take a left turn, and head north, crossing the highway. Simply follow the road around the 28 threshold, although no views can be had due to the thick vegetation. After entering the cargo area, you can enter about every road left and right for a glimpse or two. The first right turn leads to Muñiz ANGB, but you can barely see the Corsair from here. For the propliners, take the last turn right, which brings you right at the fence. Happy hunting!

4Runway 8-26 & aprons south side

Still missing some registrations after visiting spot 3, then head to spot 4. At the highway entrance after visiting spot 3, keep right and take the exit near the apron to the south of the runway. A road can be found between the highway and the fence which offers excellent views of the aprons and runway.

5Parking garage

North of runway 08/26, the top of the parking garage building, 11th floor, provides a clear view to traffic lining up/landing on runway 08 and the entire north/west part of the airport. Also landing traffic on 10 is good for photography although more mm are needed. The building is referred to as the Chili building named after the restaurant in the ground floor and that name features on the top of the building. Entry is on Avenida Isla Verde next to the Hampton Inn & Suites Hotel. Good for numbers all day and from 15:00 for photography.

This B757 was taken from spot 2 on finals for runway 08 (Wim Sonneveld).
