General

Once the proud home of operational fighters, now a storage base, Craiova is still popular among aircraft enthusiast. Centrul 67 Pregatire Operationala Avansata si Incercari in Zbor was disbanded early this century after which the Centrul de Incercari in Zbor (CIZ) became the sole flying unit here operating a small number of IAR-99s. After the IAR-99s were transferred to Air Force Application School at Boboc in early 2004 only the Centrul de Mentenanta 322 Aviatie and the Avioane Craiova which produces the IAR-99 Soim remains. The base still houses a large number of stored IAR-93s and MiG-21s.

Getting There

Coming from Pitesti, the airfield is about ten kilometers to the West, along road number 65.

Around the Airport

1Western approach

Follow the road from Craiova towards Pitesti (road 65). Just after you pass the railroad, take a left to the Hotel. Following this road will lead you to the Avioane factory. Just befor you cross the taxiway that connects the airfield and the factory, you have a good overview of the apporach and the flightlines (were many aircraft are stored).

2Overview

Just after the road from spot 1 passes the taxiway, follow the road to the right. You can follow the road untill you are to the North side of the field where you have a good view at the stored aircraft.

3Eastern approach

When you follow road 65 toward Pitesti, take the first dirt-track to the left after the perimeter fence of the base has ended. This track will lead you towards the Eastern approach and gives a (long distance) view of the flightline.
