General

This Spanish helicopter training base is located south east of Granada, close (or better in) the town of Armilla. Both reading and photography is surprisingly good here.

Layout

Armilla is a very large base offering enough space for training helicopters to stay 'above' the base. All infrastructure is on the eastern part of the base while the western part is open space for training.

Getting There

The easiest way of getting here is by travelling the A44 highway and exiting at 'Armilla'. If you head towards Armilla from this exit you will automatically end up at the main gate of the base.

Around the Airport

1Platform

The first spot to visit is where a good view is given on the platform of the helicopters. Due to the large codes applied reading is very easy. Photography is best when the helicopters do a nice approach to runway 18. Otherwise you will be facing the sun and have to photograph through a 3 m high fence.
To get here turn right at the main gate onto the N323A towards Granada (refer to 'getting there') and follow the wall that surrounds this part of the base as close as possible. You will do a couple of light and right 90 degree turns and end up at a larger road. Turn left here again and after 200 meters you will find the hangars and platform on your left.

2Hovering helicopters

Though this might not happen all the times the helicopters tend to line up nicely before heading for the platform after training. They hover past this spot near the fence and photography is possible with about 200mm (analog). The spot is easily found by turning left from spot 1 towards Gabia la Grande. You can park your car on the right and walk towards the fence on the other side of the road.

Although you are facing the sun and have to deal with a 3 m high fence, photography is not impossible at spot 1. Jan Willem Verdonk shows it with this photo of two hovering EC120s.
