General

This airport is known by two names, Aeropuerto de Salamanca and Base Aérea de Matacán, reflecting the combines civil and military use. The Spanish military have the Grupo de Escuelas de Matacán based here, flying the Aviojet and CN235. On the civil side most of the traffic comes from a civil flight school. In addition during the summer season two CL-215s fire bombers are based here. Iberia operates a daily flight to/from Barcelona, but that arrives late in the evening to depart early the next morning. For the rest you can expect to see some general aviation aircraft and helicopters here.

Layout

The airfield has a single paved runway, running northeast-southwest, with a non paved crosswind runway. All facilities are in the southeast corner. The airfield is surrounded by nearly flat farmland, which may prevent a clear view from the perimeter, depending on the season.
The preserved aircraft are all on the base, but are difficult to see from the outside, because they are hidden behind trees.

Getting There

The air base/airport is about 20-25 km east of Salamanca and is signposted on the highway (autovía) A-50 which runs to Madrid. From exit 86, drive about 2 km north and you will reach the airport's entrance and main gate of the base aérea.

Around the Airport

1Civil terminal

If you drive up to the airport, and skip the main gate, the first thing you will encounter is the civil terminal. On the right side of the terminal, you can see a part of the civil ramp and take photos through the fence. Parking in front of the terminal is free.
From the terminal you can drive north, where the flying school are located. Here you can see the rest of the civil apron and photography is possible through the fence.

2Military hangars

When you continue to the north from spot 1 and then turn right, you can have a glimpse in between the military hangars. Not all aircraft there may be read, and taking photos is not possible, if advisable at all.

3East side

For less obstructed, but more distant views on the military ramp, exit the airport and turn left on the N-501. Then take the first road left again (Carretera a Francos Viejo) and follow this for about 2 km. At some moment you will see the base again on your left, but this depends on how high the corn has grown. Considering the distance, it is best to come here when the heatwaves are not present.

4Runway 21

From spot 3, it is easy to reach the finals for runway 21 by continuing the road and then making a left turn at the first intersection. East and west of the approach there are some possibilities to park your car at the side of the road. You may not want to be too close to the centreline, to nicely photograph the aircraft from the side instead of from below, as you are not that close to the touchdown point.

5West side

While aircraft parked on the ramps are visible from the Carretera de Calvarrassa de Abajo, you may be able to get a closer look by entering a side road. However, this was not checked.

6Runway 03

This spot is similar to the one at the other side of the runway, except that you are closer to the runway. Moreover, the N-501 is a busier through road. Limited parking space is available along the small road on the west side of the centreline and south of the N-501 directly underneath the centreline.

The fire fighting CL-215s are among the reasons to go to Salamanca. Luckily it is easy to photograph them from spot 1, through or over the fence. (Leo Hoogerbrugge)

This photo by Leo Hoogerbrugge shows how aircraft fly over spot 4. You could increase your distance to the centreline to get the aircraft more from the side than below.
