Getting There

To get to Såtenäs, follow the highway 44 from Grästorp to Lidköping. Just North of Grästorp you will pass a preserved Viggen near a truckstop at a roundabout. After this Viggen keep following the 44 until you see the exit to Tun. Take this exit and drive towards Tun, which is next to Såtenäs airbase.

Around the Airport

1main gate

At the main gate there are a J32D, AJ337 and JAS39A preserved just outside the entrance, so good for taking pictures. From here you will also can see some of the aircraft parked outside.

2Runway 29

Next place to stop is at the beginning of runway 29. From the main gate drive back and take the first exit to the right. The road you are driving on, called Tunvägen, is crossing the approach lights and there are various places to park your car. It is also possible to follow a road used by farmers which will lead you towards the airbase. But for taking pictures of departing or landing aircraft this is not necessary

3Runway 01 morning

In the morning, with the sun more to the east, the best place to picture aircraft using runway 01 is at spot 3. To get here, follow Tunvägen in southern direction, and take the first road to the right. This is also a road used by local farmers, of which not all of them will appreciate your appearances.

4Runway 01 afternoon

When the sun has moved more west, the best place to stay for pictures of aircraft using runway 01 is at spot 4. Just drive further south on the Tunvägen and take the next dusty road to the right. This road will lead to some farmers and to the west side of the beginning of runway 01.

This Gripen is preserved just outside the main gate at spot 1. (Melchior Timmers)

Spot 2 is good for pictures of landing aircraft using runway 29. (Melchior Timmers)
