General

Ad Dumair or Dumayr (الضمير) is located about 40 km north east of Damascus. It houses MiG-23 fighters of the Syrian Air Force.

Be aware, plane spotting is neither understood nor appreciated in the Syrian Arab Republic!

Layout

There is ample space for this base so the east-west runway has several elaborate shelter areas with various types of drive-through and regular shelters. Also, the taxiway doubles as a secondary runway and it has several ramps alongside it.

Getting There

From Damascus you will pass the airfield when you keep following the sign posts to Palmyra. The base is on the right hand side east of Ad Dumair town along road no.2.

Around the Airport

1North side view

The main road offers distant views of the base. The road is higher and enables you to see the dump in the north east corner and part of the western shelter areas.

2East side approach

After passing the airfield, there is a road into the desert on your right hand side. From there, after under passing the approach, you should have excellent views of runway 24 and the south eastern shelter area.

3West side approach

Lastly, the approach of runway 06 can also be reached although 24 is by far the runway of choice. Take the road through Ad Dumair town, not the ring road sweeping around north of it. After the railway crossing, go right and keep left at the fork. After about 5 km you will be under the approach of runway 06.
