General

Qabr as Sitt is a small military helicopter airfield south of Damascus, north east of Al-Sayedah Zeinab. It is near the highway to the airport as well.

Be aware, plane spotting is neither understood nor appreciated in the Syrian Arab Republic!

Layout

Not much to say about the lay-out, it is basically a rectangular shaped terrain with twenty dispersals around a slab of tarmac that is used as runway. It is walled-off and equipped with watch towers. On the east side, the road runs adjacent to the wall. On all other sides, there is farmland which is mostly inaccessible.

Getting There

Easiest is to take the airport highway, either from the airport or city's ring road, no.5. Exit at the first fly-over when coming from the ring road, this is about 3 km down the airport highway. Consequently, this is the last big intersection when originating from the airport. It is 17 km from the airport exit.

After exiting, make left after about 200 metres. This is an asphalt road that starts as a suburban street at 33°28'19"N, 36°21'5"E. Follow this for 1 km. Keep left at the fork and after 500 metres the camp will appear on your right hand side.

Around the Airport

1North east side view

Just before you reach the camp, the road is slightly higher. From there you may read one or two helicopters before they disappear behind the wall.

2East side view

Position yourself on the other side of the trees lining the road along the wall to watch the approach and stay out of sight. There is a farm land dirt track which may be convenient for this.

3South east side view

You have to enter the farm/plantation that is adjacent to the southern wall. To do this, take the westbound sand track that starts at the corner of the wall, make a right following the wall. Maybe there is a lower part or hole in the wall; or you can climb one of the trees here if you are really desperate or want to attract lots of attention...

4South west corner

Possibly the best option is to pass the airbase and make a right after about 400 metres. This road bends back to base, roughly north west. You will bump into the wall. Follow the road a little more to the west as it slopes up slightly. This might just be enough to look over the wall.

5North side view

Go clockwise around the base following asphalt roads. This will bring you at the gate. If you proceed straight you can enter a farm land track. From that farm access road you may be able to see some of the eastern most helicopters sticking out high enough.

Should this track not be available or accessible, try to take one running parallel to the north.

6Safir Al-Sayedah Zeinab Hotel

This is really a shot in the dark. But the luxury Safir tourist hotel in Al Sayedah city is just 2 km westward. With a room on one of the top floors facing east, you might be able to pole something off before sundown. If not, you at least will have a decent night of sleep!
