General

Deir Zzor, or Dayr Az Zawr (دير الزور), is a city in the eastern part of Syria, close to the Euphrates river. The airfield is south of town; it is a combined civil-military airfield, albeit predominantly a military air base.

Be aware, plane spotting is neither understood nor appreciated in the Syrian Arab Republic!

Layout

The base has a north west-south east runway. Each threshold has a large drive through shelter on the east side. The south eastern threshold also has a flight line and a large ramp a bit more north which, is the civil terminal that has occasional Syrian Air flights. Because there seems to be not enough shelters to house every MiG-21, the flight line will probably hold some and you will taxi right past those...

Apart from the east side, the airfield is surrounded by arid desert-like land. The west and north is military terrain mostly.

Getting There

From Deir Zzor, take the no.4 road southbound to Abu Kamal (‏أبو كمال) and Iraq, no kidding... The airfield will appear on your right hand side and the roundabout in front of the gate has a pole-mounted MiG-17 guarding it.

Around the Airport

1East side approach - near

Driving south there is a road to you right immediately after the perimeter ends. You will drive along the fence and are in full view here. If you drive further down this road, after under passing the approach, you will probably also be able to look onto the flight line.

2East side approach - distant

Go back to road no.4 and go south. Take the next asphalt road right, then left. From here you can watch the approach although the aircraft will be higher and the trees obscure your view a bit. There are some clearings, but also lots of locals.

This photograph of the gate guarding MiG-17 was taken a couple of years ago. The paint job is more faded nowadays.
