General

Hama or Hamah (حماة) is well known because of its Nouriah water wheels. The airfield is used by the military and is perched on the western outskirts of town.

Be aware, plane spotting is neither understood nor appreciated in the Syrian Arab Republic!

Layout

The air base has an east-west runway. All activity is on the north side. There are several ramps and north of both thresholds, a shelter area can be found with a mixture of drive-through shelters and regular ones.

Getting There

From the city centre, follow the signposts to the railway station. From there you can go north towards road no. 56. After crossing the rail road, make a sharp left and you will drive towards the eastern threshold.

Alternatively, go south from the station at the T-junction near the large roundabout, go left. After a left and right turn, you will cross the rail road and will be on the south side of the airfield.

Around the Airport

1North side view

When coming from the west, keep right as the road forks near Hama. You will be driving along the perimeter momentarily. Between the undergrowth you can see part of the ramps. Do not linger too long because the road runs past the gate and there is usually a guard outside on the road.

2North east side view

Where the road meets the railway and bends north, you will have a view at the threshold of runway 27 from the north. You can also see some shelters.

3South east side approach

By using the route south from the railway station you will be ideally positioned for the western approach. There is a small village and some military barracks nearby though.

4West side approach

For the western approach the options are minimal. You can only reach the north side, by finding a spot west of spot 1 near the fork with road no.35. Backlit and still high are the key words here.
