Khalkhalah is a MiG-21 base some 55 km south of Damascus.
Be aware, plane spotting is neither understood nor appreciated in the Syrian Arab Republic!
The base has a peculiar layout with two runways in an L-shape. It is surrounded by an earth wall and military terrain with air defence sites. Both thresholds of the north-south runway have shelters. There are some dispersals along the taxiway, a small flight line on the north east side and a small ramp with hangar on the south east side.
The east-west runway only has shelters on the eastern threshold. But north of this runway, some strangely shaped ramps can be found. They look more like heli-spots but are apparently also used by the MiGs.
From the Damascus ring road, take the no.110 road to As Suwayda (السويداء). This originates just west from where the Damascus airport highway meets the ring road. The airbase will pop up on your left hand side. Construction was under way to double road no.110 and transfer it into a genuine highway.
