General

Khalkhalah is a MiG-21 base some 55 km south of Damascus.

Be aware, plane spotting is neither understood nor appreciated in the Syrian Arab Republic!

Layout

The base has a peculiar layout with two runways in an L-shape. It is surrounded by an earth wall and military terrain with air defence sites. Both thresholds of the north-south runway have shelters. There are some dispersals along the taxiway, a small flight line on the north east side and a small ramp with hangar on the south east side.

The east-west runway only has shelters on the eastern threshold. But north of this runway, some strangely shaped ramps can be found. They look more like heli-spots but are apparently also used by the MiGs.

Getting There

From the Damascus ring road, take the no.110 road to As Suwayda (‏‏السويداء‎‎). This originates just west from where the Damascus airport highway meets the ring road. The airbase will pop up on your left hand side. Construction was under way to double road no.110 and transfer it into a genuine highway.

Around the Airport

1North west side approach 15 - distant

Just when you reach the perimeter of the airfield, there is an exit towards a petrol station on your left hand side. From there you should be okay albeit a bit far away from the approach to runway 15. Only good in the afternoon.

To the north east of this spot, construction for a fly-over was under way. From there you should have a better view although you will not be able to stay for long.

2North west side approach 15 - near

From spot 1, stay on the western parallel road. You can get a little bit nearer to the threshold by parking your car on the shoulder or one of the tracks leading westbound into the rubble.

3West side view

The airfield is somewhat higher than the highway and walled-off. The highway is a bit higher than the parallel road to the west of it. Near the southern shelters you should park your car and get out to have a good view of the MiG-21s parked in front and inside the shelters at the threshold of runway 33. You might want to gain height by standing on top of your car ;-). The northern approach is used more often than this one, so no point in lingering here.

4South west side approach 07

Continue south again. You will now underpass the approach to runway 05, again the north eastern approach will be used more often. If you want to wait it out here, park your car on one of the sand tracks that connects the old to the new highway.

5South west side approach - distant

Go onto the highway and head further south. There is a road along the perimeter, so make a legal U-turn and head back north. Go right into that road when you reach the perimeter again. You will be in full view of the base. From here, you are quite far for runway 33 and a bit closer for runway 07. But these are both used infrequently. Stay close to the highway or else you will attract the attention of the watch tower in the south western corner of the base.

6South side view

Follow the road from spot 5 further along the fence. After the road bends sharply to the right, you will have a view of the south eastern shelter area. Best late in the afternoon. Beware of the watch towers though! Moreover, this is officially military property.

7South east side approach 25

The east side of the base is surrounded by rather desolate land. From highway 110 there is a road running straight through it. The entry to this is at 33° 2'14.68"N, 36°34'36.36"E. After 3.7 km there is a dirt tack north. Make a left into this and drive on until it gets too sandy; this will take you about 800 metres into the farm land. For a better view you will have to continue on foot as you will still be over 1.5 km from the threshold and centreline. Not advisable to stay long as there is no easy retreat from here.
