Marj Ruhayyil is a military airbase south west of Damascus Intl. It holds helicopter gunships nowadays.
Be aware, plane spotting is neither understood nor appreciated in the Syrian Arab Republic!
Its fighter base pedigree is witnessed by numerous shelters of various sizes located around the thresholds of the dual east-west runways. There is also a sand runway south of that, which appears to be disused. Some derelict aircraft are parked alongside it. The helicopters use the shelters now, and there are two dedicated helicopter ramps north of the runway as well. In the south west corner, a taxiway leads to a couple of entrances into the hills. These are probably caverns. The base is in the middle of the desert and most, if not all, the surrounding area is military property.
There are two easy ways of getting here. First, from the airport, take the first exit off the airport highway. Make a left and cross the highway, go left at the fork. Follow this road for 10 km and you will have to go left, or else you will drive straight to the gate.
From the Damascus ring road, take road no.110. That is the first exit west of the airport highway. See also Kalkhalah airfield guide, because this road leads past that base too.
