General

Rasin al Aboud, or Rasm 'Abbud, is a training base 35 km east of Aleppo, or Halab (ﺣﻠﺐ). It is situated north of highway 4, west of Dayr Ha'fir (ديرحافر). Sister training base Jirah is some 35 km to the east as well.

Be aware, plane spotting is neither understood nor appreciated in the Syrian Arab Republic!

Layout

The airfield has an east-west runway. There used to be a north-south runway and a completely circular taxiway; both have been partly broken up. Along the northern half of this circle, various derelict Meteors can be found. The north west and north east thresholds have some shelters, but the main activity is from the main ramp south of the runway and both threshold ramps.

Getting There

Simply follow highway 4 from Aleppo to the east until you see the preserved MiG-21 on your left, go left there.

Around the Airport

1Preserved MiG-21

Marking the entrance road that leads to the gate and past the southern perimeter is a MiG-21.

2West side approach

Although runway 28 is the preferred runway, the west side offers good views of the approach to 10, the western threshold, the main ramp, and the nearest derelict Meteors. So spot 2 is a compulsory stop-over. Take the asphalt road along the eastern edge of the village that is just west of the base.

3North west side view

To have a look at the various Meteors you can best follow the canal road on the north side, stopping at several spots.

4North side view

Proceed further down until you reach a sand track that heads south to a building site that is partly on base. Actually, they are dismantling the northern part of the base here, recovering the concrete. No idea if you can enter this site and if the Meteors are reachable. They will probably be scrapped soon now.

5North east side view

Still further to the east, there is a track leading to a farm. It brings you somewhat closer to the fence and the eastern batch of Meteors. You might be able to see the eastern threshold flight line as well.

6East side approach - near

Follow the road along the canal, it bends north east. Cross the canal and go right, through the village on the asphalt road. You will be driving along the eastern bank of another canal. Take one of the sand tracks on your left after passing the threshold. You will be about 1 km from the threshold and 100 metres south of the centre line.

This spot can also be reached by following the road from spot 1 all the way along the base. Go left at the cross road onto the asphalt road.

7East side view - distant

From the road that runs along the southern perimeter, you can keep a little bit more distance from the base. Position yourself north of this road, east of the cross road mentioned near the south east corner of the base.

8South side view

From the road running south of the base, you can have a peek onto the east side of the main ramp that is packed with Albatrosses. Buildings and trees on the base block most of your view though. Moreover, this spot is close to a farms and a small military camp.

9Gate guards

The gate is on the south side and has two preserved aircraft, so well worth a drive-by.
