Tiyas can probably best be called the mother of all Syrian fighter bases, because it holds squadrons of MiG-25, Su-22, and Su-24 aircraft. It is situated along highway no.3 to tourist attraction Palmyra.
Be aware, plane spotting is neither understood nor appreciated in the Syrian Arab Republic!
Tiyas features an east-west runway, with massive shelter areas around the thresholds, especially the south eastern one. There is a unpaved parallel runway as well as a north-south one, 17-35. Both are presumed to be out of use. Of course, the base is in the middle of desert land and various military areas surround it.
There are two convenient routes. The first is most logical. Simply take highway 3 from Homs, or Hims (حمص), via Al Furqlus to Palmyra (رمدت). The other option when coming from Damascus, is to leave highway 5 at Duma, and use the no.7 road via Al Quaryatayn. Also see the airfield guide for An Nasriyah for a description. At the cross road north east of Al Quaryatayn, make a left and right; basically this means going straight. You will now approach Tiyas from the south and the large dome shelters are visible in the desert from afar.
