General

The international airport of "boomtown no. 1" (15% of all tower cranes wordlwide are operated in Dubai) can not be anything else than big, busy and under development - and so it is. Like elsewhere in the Middle East, the major part of the movements - especially passenger flights - land and depart around midnight and later. More than enough remains to be seen during daytime though, especially the spotters' highlights like regional carriers and non-scheduled cargo flights with mainly Soviet-built types. Unfortunately, An-12s have been completely banned from UAE skies. Of course, Dubai is also the home base to the growing all-wide body Emirates Airlines fleet. Be aware, plane spotting is neither understood nor appreciated in Arab countries!

Layout

The airfield is built around two parallel runways of at least 4000m in length. Such long runways are required for the many heavy airplanes departing in the high local temperatures, including the A380. Major (re)construction has been carried out to stagger the runways (12R/30L was moved south-east) and double Terminal 1. From the outside, visibilty on the runways and aprons is very limited as buildings and walls get in the way nearly everywhere.

Getting There

For many visitors to the emirates, DXB will be the port of entry in which case the aircrew gets you here. When arriving by road this major airport is well sign-posted of course and lies embedded in the city (also spelled as Dubayy), east of its centre. Roads E-11 and E-311 lead directly to Sharjah in the northeast.

Around the Airport

1Terminal 1

Once behind customs and security, the main terminal provides ample opportunity to spot planes as the restaurants and waiting areas are mostly looking out over aprons and runways. Photography is possible, albeit through glass and likely not appreciated by security. The huge terminal building is completely surrounded by aircraft parking stands.

2Airshow apron

Obviously, during the Dubai Air Show this apron is the place to be. Apart from the exhibits, most of the normal movements and a lot of parked aircraft will be in sight. Without airside access, spotting may be possible from the parking lot. Just to the right (when looking towards the field) is the VIP terminal.

3205 Road

This road along a housing area has a clear view on the final of 30R, and the touch-down zone 30L behind it. It is a very open area, meaning low-profile operations are difficult.

4Terminal 2

It should be possible to do some spotting when travelling by air, using this terminal. Info on this is limited however, the well-known carriers all use Terminal 1.

5North-west corner

In front of a distribution centre, it is possible to stop your car for a short while and walk towards the fence. You are now on the edge of the nearly 4km long apron where the more interesting aircraft park and a handfull of them can be logged. Photography is difficult due to the fence. Parking for a longer time is possible along the road from here towards Terminal 2.

6Deira

While Scramble does not specifically endorse any hotels, both the Sheraton Deira on Al Muteena Street, close to Abu Baker Al Siddique Road, and the JW Marriott on that road just happen to have a nice roof terrace with pool, right in the extended centreline of the runways. From here, one overlooks the entire airport, but it is normally too far to read anything off in the hot air. Departures towards the coast or approaches from that side however come well into spotting and photo range. A less expensive alternative is the Dream Palace Hotel with airfield oriented windows that slide open.

Whether our hobby can be practised while enjoying a poolside drink depends on the mood of the staff present. All scenarios have been seen, from whole groups happily shooting anything flying over from a secluded corner, to alarmed reactions on the use of binoculars followed by 'accidental' visits of security persons to the terrace. Mind the security cameras overlooking the pool areas too. As an alternative, registrations are easily read from the streets in this neighbourhood and photos are possible as well if one can avoid attention.

When security hassle can be avoided, area 6 is great for photography. Photo taken off the roof of the Marriott hotel with 300mm effective. (Michel van der Voort)
