Minhad lies some 25km south of Dubai, in the desert. It is home to a dwindling number of UAE Air Force aircraft and has been hosting part of the Middle East operations of both Canada and Australia. From 2001 until 2010, Canada's "Camp Mirage" - officially only referred to as "the CF sustainment camp located in southwest Asia" - hosted Canadian Forces transport aircraft. Australia consolidated its operations in the Gulf to Minhad by 2009, resulting in based or regularly visiting C-130s, P-3s and C-17s.
The UAE Flying Training Academy has lost its aircraft here, and the Helicopter squadron operates just two AW139s. A new squadron with one Saab 2000AEW is in the test phase. Just outside the base, a Hawk Mk102 sits on a roundabout, but this is almost certainly a mock-up. Be aware, plane spotting is neither understood nor appreciated in Arab countries!
The single runway that was lengthened to 4000m early this century forms the centre of the large base area. This area is surrounded by a 6 meter-high wall and three lines of fences. There is no way to approach this field under cover.
When driving, there is just one option: the only access road from the nearby intersection of the Dubai - Al Ain Road (highway E-66).
