Umm al Quwain (or Umm al Qaywayn) is a northwestern emirate on the Persian Gulf attracting visitors with an interest in the more extreme sports like motor racing and skydiving. Its modest airfield is suitable for visual flying only but has a paved runway of 1800m. The peace and quiet here are only disturbed by air sports events, mostly skydiving championships and 'boogies' that involve the use of aircraft like an L-410 or even An-12 for the jumpers. Be aware, plane spotting is neither understood nor appreciated in Arab countries!
The single runway with just one paved exit lies between the highway and a bay, opposite the peninsula that the city is on. Traces of an old unpaved runway are still there but the airfield-like complex east of the highway is a drag racing stadium. For a change, this field is surrounded by a high fence instead of a wall.
The airfield lies directly along the highway from Sharjah/Ajman to Ras al Khaymah called Al Ittehad Road here, some 15km past the junction to Umm al Qaywayn city. You can't miss this field due to the prominently parked IL-76.
IL-76 now used as a billboard was flown in and parked near spot 1. 3D-RTA on the intake covers is not an ex regi of this plane by the way. (Erik Sleutelberg)
