General

Altus AFB is the hometown of advanced training for large transport and tanker aircraft. Main unit is the 97th Air Mobility Wing.

Getting There

The base lies in the eastern outskirts of the City of Altus in the remote western part of Oklahoma. Nearest highways are I-40 (Amarillo-Oklahoma City) and I-44 (Wichita Falls-Oklahoma City). Take an exit with an Altus heading and from downtown take US62 east.

Around the Airport

1Main Gate

From this point you can see the preserved JRB4/Beech 18 on a stick on the roundabout a little further down the road, behind the main gate.

235L

Turning of US62/E Broadway St at N2070 Rd should give some nice shots of the arriving aircraft with northerly winds and in the afternoon. If you cross the Route 62 towards the base, into another gate, there is a small dirt road to the right where you can park temporarily to note down the C-17s between the large hangars. If you turn right onto the Route 62, there is a small memorial park, east of the runway, where you can photograph morning traffic and note down the parked C-17s. You are very exposed here so do not stay too long.

335R

In the morning, good pictures of aircraft using 35R can be had from this dirt track. Also a good view on the base to read some numbers.

435R/17L halfway

Another dirt track with a good view on the base and picture possibilities halfway runway 35R/17L.

517L

Another dirttrack and again good in the morning for taking pictures and reading numbers.

6Assault

This is a nice quiet, undisturbed spot with southerly winds. The angle on approaching aircraft might not be very favourable but runway 354/174 called Assault on the radio, is a 3500ft assault strip and might give some spectacular views. In the morning you will have a good view onto landing traffic onto 17R, which will change into landing traffic for runway 17L in the afternoon.

717R

Picture possibiites from this spot and a bit further north for approaching aircraft on runway 17R. Also a great view on the alert area. During airshows lots of local aircraft are placed here while during operating hours the C17s like to practice powerbacks here. If you want landing traffic onto 17R in the afternoon, you can also place yourself near the meandering bushes just in front of it.

817R

A bit further down the road another clear view on the runway and KC-135 aprons. Good for afternoon pictures.

9Control Tower

This is a dead end road an you can just see past the bushes to read off the aircraft on the small ramp east of you and the ramp behind the control tower. The preserved C-141B is also there.

At spot 6 all landing traffic can be seen, up close when landing at the Assault runway, as seen here. (Piet Luijken)

Departing traffic can be taken from the memorial park near spot 2 along Route 62. (Piet Luijken)
