Foreign power break Swedish borders with two fighters.
The planes flew in from the east during NATO exercise.
During midsummer evening afternoon – during the middle of the large NATO exercise BALTOPS - violated two planes from foreign powers Swedish airspace, DN can reveal. (probably two Russian fighters my opininion).
Armed Forces confirms the break of border, but would not comment on the plan's nationality.
- It is a very provocative behavior, saying military strategy expert Stefan Ring (Swedish Defence).

The two planes flew into Swedish airspace at 15.25 on Midsummer Eve on June 20 this year. Classified documents from the Armed Forces, as DN asked out and have read, indicates that the planes came from the east and flew towards Östergarn, Gotland. According to the report, they were the longest ten kilometers into Swedish airspace and had a total flight distance of 28 kilometers. The violation has not been known to the public before.
A map of the documents shows that the planes then made a turn to the southeast and two minutes later, at 15:27, flew out in international airspace again.
At this time there was NATO exercise BALTOPS in the Baltic Sea where 30 ships and 52 aircraft from 14 countries participated. The exercise was led by the United States Navy with the Swedish author Ola Truedsson officer as deputy commander and ended on Midsummer's Day. Russia, which usually take part in the exercise, was not invited to participate this year. Rather surprised the Russians with a private exercise in the Kaliningrad region.
Micael Bydén, Swedish Air Force Chief of the Armed Forces, would not comment on which countries plan violated Swedish airspace June 20 belonged. Nor what aircraft it is on.
- What I can say about the event is that it is known to us. It is reported and defense and Swedish Air Force has acted against the aircraft according to the routines we have, he says.
What does that mean?
- I can not go into.
Have you acted against the planes?
- BALTOPS ongoing at this time. We were up in the air and moved us out there. We have dealt with this and had control. There is nothing surprising, nothing that has gone out.
Where the aircraft that participated in BALTOPS which violated the airspace?
- There were aircraft that had interest in or around exercise, that's what I can say about.
In the past five years, Swedish airspace violated at 58 occasions. According to the Armed Forces statistics DN taken note of the number of airspace violations per year has not increased.
- However, the increasing activity, where planes and ships will more often and closer to the borders of Sweden, palpable, says Micael Bydén.
Just last week it was revealed that an American signals intelligence plane violated Swedish airspace July 18 this year. Armed Forces did not then comment on which country the plane belonged, but American authorities later confirmed that it came from the USA.
Stefan Ring, military strategy expert who previously worked at the National Defence University, is not aware of the intrusion on Midsummer Eve, but sees two possible explanations for the violation.
- There may of course be that the aircraft took part in BALTOPS and that the violation was a mistake, but then I think it's a bit odd that the Armed Forces have not told you about it before, and do not want to comment on how it is now when it becomes known public, he says.
The second scenario Stefan Ring points to is that Russia is behind the violation.
- One reason could be that you want to test Swedish preparedness, see what happens if they behave like that. If the defense does not react at all, it can be taken as proof that Sweden does not really care about making rejections. From my perspective, it would be an unfortunate development that could lead to escalating activity.
He also says that the violation can be a mark against Sweden's participation in BALTOPS.
- By violating airspace during the exercise show that you dislike Sweden's participation, he said.
Stefan Ring assess the movement patterns of the breach on June 20 as noticeably provocative.
- It is absolutely provocative behavior. One, it is forbidden to violate Swedish airspace. Two, go pitch in anyway they probably want to show that they do as they please. That it is "we who decide," about the attitude. It's not good.
Violations of defense detects must be reported to the State Department. DN has repeatedly sought representatives from the Foreign Ministry that has not been returned.
