The two planes flew into Swedish airspace at 15.25 on Midsummer Eve on June 20 this year. Classified documents from the Armed Forces, as DN asked out and have read, indicates that the planes came from the east and flew towards Östergarn, Gotland. According to the report, they were the longest ten kilometers into Swedish airspace and had a total flight distance of 28 kilometers. The violation has not been known to the public before.

Stefan Ring, military strategy expert who previously worked at the National Defence University, is not aware of the intrusion on Midsummer Eve, but sees two possible explanations for the violation.

- There may of course be that the aircraft took part in BALTOPS and that the violation was a mistake, but then I think it's a bit odd that the Armed Forces have not told you about it before, and do not want to comment on how it is now when it becomes known public, he says.

The second scenario Stefan Ring points to is that Russia is behind the violation.

- One reason could be that you want to test Swedish preparedness, see what happens if they behave like that. If the defense does not react at all, it can be taken as proof that Sweden does not really care about making rejections. From my perspective, it would be an unfortunate development that could lead to escalating activity.

He also says that the violation can be a mark against Sweden's participation in BALTOPS.

The plan came from the east and flew towards Gotland with a total flight distance of 28 kilometers. According to the Air Force chief Micael Bydén had the Swedish armed forces in full control of the incident. But neither the Armed Forces or Ministry of Foreign Affairs wants to comment on the nationality of the plan had been, the circumstances surrounding the violation or how the defense behavior in the event.

But now DN reveal new details about the violation.

The plan, which flew into Sweden was Polish Mig-29, which together with UK Typhoon aircraft represents NATO's Baltic incident preparedness.

On June 20, there were two major military exercises while on the Baltic Sea: NATO exercise BALTOPS outside Karlskrona, with Sweden as a participant, and a Russian response exercise in comparable size around Kaliningrad.


In a written statement to the DN from NATO described the air over the Baltic Sea as crowded because of all flight activity.

"Plan from Poland and the United Kingdom who was assigned the NATO Baltic incident preparedness went up several times that day to visually identify Russian military aircraft and secure the Baltic airspace," the NATO statement said.

- It does not concern us in any great degree. Russia regularly fly over the Baltic Sea. The Russians have the right to fly in international airspace. You go up and look at them only.

The Minister said it is not serious about Russia spying on a military exercise including Sweden.

- No, it is done routinely, said Bildt.
