Foreign power break Swedish borders with two fighters.

Foreign power break Swedish borders with two fighters.

The planes flew in from the east during NATO exercise.

During midsummer evening afternoon – during the middle of the large NATO exercise BALTOPS - violated two planes from foreign powers Swedish airspace, DN can reveal. (probably two Russian fighters my opininion).

Armed Forces confirms the break of border, but would not comment on the plan's nationality.

- It is a very provocative behavior, saying military strategy expert Stefan Ring (Swedish Defence).

During midsummer evening afternoon - the middle of the large NATO exercise BALTOPS - violated two planes from foreign powers Swedish airspace, DN can reveal.

Armed Forces confirms the breach, but would not comment on the plan's nationality.

- It is a very provocative behavior, saying military strategy expert Stefan Ring.

The two planes flew into Swedish airspace at 15.25 on Midsummer Eve on June 20 this year. Classified documents from the Armed Forces, as DN asked out and have read, indicates that the planes came from the east and flew towards Östergarn, Gotland. According to the report, they were the longest ten kilometers into Swedish airspace and had a total flight distance of 28 kilometers. The violation has not been known to the public before.

A map of the documents shows that the planes then made a turn to the southeast and two minutes later, at 15:27, flew out in international airspace again.

At this time there was NATO exercise BALTOPS in the Baltic Sea where 30 ships and 52 aircraft from 14 countries participated. The exercise was led by the United States Navy with the Swedish author Ola Truedsson officer as deputy commander and ended on Midsummer's Day. Russia, which usually take part in the exercise, was not invited to participate this year. Rather surprised the Russians with a private exercise in the Kaliningrad region.

Micael Bydén, Swedish Air Force Chief of the Armed Forces, would not comment on which countries plan violated Swedish airspace June 20 belonged. Nor what aircraft it is on.

- What I can say about the event is that it is known to us. It is reported and defense and Swedish Air Force has acted against the aircraft according to the routines we have, he says.

What does that mean?

- I can not go into.

Have you acted against the planes?

- BALTOPS ongoing at this time. We were up in the air and moved us out there. We have dealt with this and had control. There is nothing surprising, nothing that has gone out.

Where the aircraft that participated in BALTOPS which violated the airspace?

- There were aircraft that had interest in or around exercise, that's what I can say about.

In the past five years, Swedish airspace violated at 58 occasions. According to the Armed Forces statistics DN taken note of the number of airspace violations per year has not increased.

- However, the increasing activity, where planes and ships will more often and closer to the borders of Sweden, palpable, says Micael Bydén.

Just last week it was revealed that an American signals intelligence plane violated Swedish airspace July 18 this year. Armed Forces did not then comment on which country the plane belonged, but American authorities later confirmed that it came from the USA.

Stefan Ring, military strategy expert who previously worked at the National Defence University, is not aware of the intrusion on Midsummer Eve, but sees two possible explanations for the violation.

- There may of course be that the aircraft took part in BALTOPS and that the violation was a mistake, but then I think it's a bit odd that the Armed Forces have not told you about it before, and do not want to comment on how it is now when it becomes known public, he says.

The second scenario Stefan Ring points to is that Russia is behind the violation.

- One reason could be that you want to test Swedish preparedness, see what happens if they behave like that. If the defense does not react at all, it can be taken as proof that Sweden does not really care about making rejections. From my perspective, it would be an unfortunate development that could lead to escalating activity.

He also says that the violation can be a mark against Sweden's participation in BALTOPS.

- By violating airspace during the exercise show that you dislike Sweden's participation, he said.

Stefan Ring assess the movement patterns of the breach on June 20 as noticeably provocative.

- It is absolutely provocative behavior. One, it is forbidden to violate Swedish airspace. Two, go pitch in anyway they probably want to show that they do as they please. That it is "we who decide," about the attitude. It's not good.

Violations of defense detects must be reported to the State Department. DN has repeatedly sought representatives from the Foreign Ministry that has not been returned.

15 Russian planes were chased away before the violation

Fifteen Russian military planes were chased away from the Baltic airspace on midsummer evening morning - the same afternoon violated two unknown flight Swedish border. (Nota Bene : they were from Poland; se downwards).

- As I see it there are many indications that the plan belonged to Russia, says Jan Mörtberg, colonel at the National Defence University. (They were from Poland according Carl Bildt).

On Tuesday DN revealed that two flights from foreign powers violated Swedish airspace on Christmas Eve this year. The plan came from the east and flew towards Gotland with a total flight distance of 28 kilometers. According to the Air Force chief Micael Bydén had the Swedish armed forces in full control of the incident. But neither the Armed Forces or Ministry of Foreign Affairs wants to comment on the nationality of the plan had been, the circumstances surrounding the violation or how the defense behavior in the event.

- Foreign Ministry has called up representatives of the embassy, complained of the violation and the importance of respecting Swedish admission policies. Thus, the case is finished for us, says Jon Pelling at the Foreign Press.

The breach took place on 20 June and at the time was still ongoing NATO exercise BALTOPS, led by the United States Navy and with Sweden as one of the participating countries.

Of a government decision that was signed by Foreign Minister Carl Bildt (M) in May shows that all countries that participated in the exercise, including Germany, France and the USA, had access to the Swedish territory during the entire month of June.

- As I see it there are many indications that the plan belonged to Russia, says Jan Mörtberg, colonel at the National Defence University.

Unlike previous years had not been invited Russia to participate in BALTOPS in 2014.

- Facing Russia confirms the violation, in that case a change of the normal picture. We see a negative trend, serious performances that give cause for concern, says Jan Mörtberg.

DN has been in contact with the Latvian defense confirming that the NATO Baltic incident preparedness, which monitors the skies over the Baltic countries, the same morning, June 20 identified 15 Russian planes of various types outside the Latvian border. Among other things, several hunting and attack aircraft of the type Su-24 and Su-34.

Carl Bildt.

It is wrong. The plan was from Poland, and it was apparently a pure mistake. Nothing to do of the thing. The two planes who overflew Gotland was from Poland. (from Swedish text).

Violations of Swedish airspace.

NATO about air violations: Would stop the Russian military violations of Swedish air space.

The Polish NATO Plan violated Swedish airspace on Christmas Eve went up to intercept Russian military aircraft near the Swedish border. It says NATO for DN.

The Polish NATO Plan violated Swedish airspace on Christmas Eve went up to intercept Russian military aircraft near the Swedish border. NATO says to DN.

On Midsummer Eve violated two military planes from Poland Swedish airspace at Gotland, the DN previously been able to tell. The Foreign Ministry and the Armed Forces have so far not commented on the circumstances surrounding the incident.

But now DN reveal new details about the violation.

The plan, which flew into Sweden was Polish Mig-29, which together with UK Typhoon aircraft represents NATO's Baltic incident preparedness.

On June 20, there were two major military exercises while on the Baltic Sea: NATO exercise BALTOPS outside Karlskrona, with Sweden as a participant, and a Russian response exercise in comparable size around Kaliningrad.

In a written statement to the DN from NATO described the air over the Baltic Sea as crowded because of all flight activity.

"Plan from Poland and the United Kingdom who was assigned the NATO Baltic incident preparedness went up several times that day to visually identify Russian military aircraft and secure the Baltic airspace," the NATO statement said.

- Under such a plan patrols came short and inadvertently into Swedish airspace, saying a central NATO officer, who speaks officially for NATO.

Spokesperson, who has commodore rank of captain, do not want to be named because the information relates to intelligence.

The Polish plan was that along 10 km into Swedish territory and left the Swedish airspace after one minute and 43 seconds.

Followed the planes that exceeded the Swedish border after Russian plane?

- Yes, they were out on a diversion mission, said NATO spokesman.

Exactly where the Russian military aircraft were NATO would not tell.

- I am not prepared to go into details about how, when and where in relation to the Russian plan, said the spokesperson.

- Normally we would not fly so far out of the Baltic Sea, but all in all - the ongoing exercises, NATO resources in the Baltic Sea and the high activity in general - contributed to the situation.

The Armed Forces do not comment on NATO tasks.

- We had a private flight in the air and good control of the Baltic Sea, says Mikael Abrahamsson, information officer at the Armed Forces.

Foreign Minister Carl Bildt (M) says he's not heard of the Russian activity in connection with the violation.

- There is nothing reported to me, for the simple reason that it is not touched on Swedish territory and obviously not seen as something that deviates from the general picture, says Carl Bildt.

- It does not concern us in any great degree. Russia regularly fly over the Baltic Sea. The Russians have the right to fly in international airspace. You go up and look at them only.

The Minister said it is not serious about Russia spying on a military exercise including Sweden.

- No, it is done routinely, said Bildt.
