Following this request: http://www.scramble.nl/forum/viewtopic.php?t=40512 from Hornet 69, I have made an example how to make these frames using layers in Photoshop:

Step 1:: Adjust the size of the picture you would like to use. In this case, I have resized this picture to 800*500 pixels:

Image

Step 2:. Create a new document that is larger than the picture. In this case I have chosen to make a document 900*600 with a white background color. Then copy the original image into this new document. Photoshop will automatically create a new layer on top of the white layer, and this looks like:

Image

Step 3: Add some effects to the layer that has the picture. For this example I have selected "Bevel and Emboss" and "Drop Shadow":

Image

Step 4: Copy the unit badge into the document. Again, PS will create a new layer. Adjust size and position of the badge, and add some effects (again "Bevel and Emboss" and "Drop Shadow"):

Image

Step 5: Add the text, which will result in yet another layer. I have used the Mistral front size 8 and brought down the opacity to 28%:

Image

@Hornet69: I hope this is useful. Creating images like this does require some basic understanding of layers but does give the possibility to create your own style. If you have any further questions, please let me now!

Good, simple explanation for those interested Arnold. Sure that will be appreciated.

Eventhough I don't use frames for my aviation pics now, this is an excellent explanation Arnold. Maybe I will consider frames for the future. Thank you very much!

Nice tutorial! And it looks nice as well!

What i do is:

In photoshop, do Select all.
Go to edit -> stroke 1px with an opacity of about 75%. Then deselect everything, and add your text.

Result is a simple thin border, wich makes viewing the image allot more nicer then without any border.

Joost, great result. Glad to see the explanation was OK. If you need anymore explanation on layers or Photoshop in general, let me know!

BTW: making these frames can be easily automated by recording an action (which basically is a macro).

Good job on the border! And that KC-135 (forgot the french naming of it) really has a nice 'smile' painted on his nose  .

To Arnold,
Following this request: http://www.scramble.nl/forum/viewtopic.php?t=40512 from Hornet 69, I have made an example how to make these frames using layers in Photoshop:
Thanks a lot! I will try this soon and show the result. As this year is the first year I have gone "digital" I can say I do not have a lot of experience with Photoshop. ... but I do my best.

Is it possible that PS do these steps automatically? If so, can anybody help me out.

Again thanks a lot :D .

Grtz,

Edward.

You can create an action, which is like an Excel Macro.

They can be recorded, once again, like an Excel Macro.
experiment a little with that, and before you know it, you have an action!

Hello Arnold,

Do you know why I get my picture in black and white when I paste it in the white layer?

Actions

Post by Arnold ten Pas »

Hi,

@ Bartje: No idea actually.. If you send me the PSD, maybe I can figure something out.
@ Hornet69: It is quit easy. You can do the following:

- Go to the actions panel, either via Alt+F9 or Window/Actions
- Create a new action by clicking the second symbol from the right:

Image

- Give the action a name
- You can choose filing the action under "Default Actions" or create a new set (basically a folder) to file it under.
- Record the action by executing all the steps you need for creating your frames. When finished, push the stop button (Most left one)
- Ready!:

Image

- Whenever you need to make a frame: open the foto, and simply press the play button in the actions panel!
