Shooting slides...Rare breed ?

Post by foxyee »

Hi,

Am I now becoming a rare breed ? As much as I like digital and all its advantages, I still love shooting slide film !

I stopped using slide film for nearly 2 years and then recently I started to have withdrawals and realised that my collection had suddenly stopped.

So I went out and treated myself to a very nice second hand Nikon F5 and have now started with vengence and I must say I am enjoying just as before adding these new slides to my collection.

Are there any photographers who still exchange slides with other photographers, either on Kodachrome or Fujichrome ?

Regards
Martin

Hi Martin,

I never stopped shooting slides, not even with a great DSLR at hand. I never exchange them though, not my thing.

It's hard work for me with two EOS3's and one EOS40D....

First the slide and then the digital :D

I found doing both seriously had an adverse effect on both, I chose to go digital only, no regrets

Same for me, I had been an avid Kodachrome shooter for over 15 years when I quit it for digital. Never looked back.
You have to move on sometimes...

Hiya...

I totally understand what you say about making a choice and moving on !

Well I made my choice as in that I now only shoot slides of static aircraft...the only exception is aircraft taxying that I can shoot slide and digital.
All flying photos are made with my Nikon D300.

I just felt that having a slide collection that I have made since 1979 and items in my collection going back further that I wished to carry on collecting to continue my great collection of oldies and what i hope will be oldies when I "pop my clogs" of now modern stuff !

I still exchange with a great guy in Canada with whom we exchange both recently taken shots and also stuff from the past....now that I feel is a delight and always great to see what each package holds :o

Maybe I'm just old and nostalgic but I still remember fondly the good old days which I am sure many on scramble will remember :D

Martin, absolutely. A difference seems to be I do not collect in general, I only shoot for my own collection. My current DSLR is the D300 too and since I have it, I reserve slides for when circumstances make it worthwhile. That is when the scene or subject are suitable to project over 1.5m wide (or high) in high quality. 8)

Ah, nostalgia, such a wonderful thing. Although not a slide-shooter myself, (and not that active a shooter on the whole) I do remember the evenings of watching slides on the big screen with my dad. He still has several boxes of slides, and I remember vividly the sheer excitement of waiting what would pop up next once the loud clicks of changing slides had started. As a 7 year old boy my sport (in the beginning) was to guess the type and airline as fast as possible (yes, most slides were civil) and run around the living room after getting 5 in a row. I guess those evenings brought me to a point where I wanted to be a spotter as well. (...and I became one)

Nice to see some are still active slide-shooters. (although I knew that of Key already)

Reality check; We are all considered a rare breed, whether or not we shoot films... :-)

We offer a fine opportunity to exchange slides at our Dutch Spotters Conventions (organised together with Airnieuws). Check this link: http://www.scramble.nl/nsk-dsc/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I still keep on using K64 film since i started somewhere in 1976, only military stuff and only of European air forces.
I will consider going digital when Kodak stops making K64, but not before.
So anyone who is interested in trading K64 slides send me a PM.

By the way i'm also interested in trading patches of all european air forces.

I'm still a K64 collector, I started many years ago and (after a stop for some reasons) I re-started taking shot both digital and slides.
I think that collecting slides gives much more pleasure than taking digital images, and exchanging them has its own charm!

If you are interested in exchanging some slides (K64 only), feel free to contact me!
