23-06-'09 GLV-5 --> My best pics ever!

Post by Sven van Roij »

My dad works in his spare time as an dog trainer. Last week he told me that one of his students was an AH-64D pilot. Yesterday I had a little chat with him. He was scheduald to fly today @ GLV-5: a nice opportunity for me to see him in action.

It has been my first time ever @ GLV-5 and I like it a lot! The Q-09 and Q-21 were flying today. Here my result; I'm quite proud of it!

Puts a whole new perspective on the term 'dogfight'... Is there a special helmet and flying suit designed? How does ATC deal with this, do they have dogs as well? I knew the airforce was in short supply of pilots, but this is new to me! :-)
Rome has Bufalotta, Arizona has alotta BUFF..

Great pictures especially 1 and 2.

Would like to go there myself. Maybe you can point out how to get there or is it a restricted area.

Hi Sven,

Can you tell us more about GLV-5 ? This is a completely new thing for me. What does GLV-5 stand for, where is it, when is it active, how do I get there ?

Details, details, details please.....

GLV 5 is the low fly area at the Oirschotse Heide. It is al public area. You can park your car at the Eindhovensedijk and walk into the area.

51°28'42.79"N 5°20'52.30"O

There is not that much traffic and you need to be lucky but if you catch some choppers you can make some great shots. Chinooks perform landings overthere, and apache's can do some low flying over there. When in the area the choppers will call Eindhoven Tower to are going to the Oirschotse Heide.

Want to know more details and see some more pictures? join the EWAS forum, there are some very nice pictures over there and some guys which know all the details about this place.

It's a simple dutch abbreviation; GebiedLaagVliegen no.5. You can see the other GLV's over here: http://www.defensie.nl/actueel/vliegbewegingen/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It's on the "Oirschotse Heide". Near Eindhoven AB. On this map you can see the necessary info:

When they fly! As far as I know there isn't a schedule. You need to bring a scanner with you and some luck: they use the frequencies of EHEH.

Good luck all!

Please take time to read the green signs when entering the GLV V area! It is both military area and natural landscape. Access is on your own risk and a lot of things are forbidden in the area. This is for your own and other people's safety and wellness. Army vehicles are driving through the heath and woods at high speeds, so be careful. Do not litter and use your brains (gezonde verstand). O, and have fun offcourse!!

(At EWAS there were reports of people not complying with these rules, resulting in dangerous situations with vehicles & kids and helicopters & dogs involved. Luckely, these people were not spotters. For example, once I warned a guy that was launching his kite while I just heard that a Chinook was approaching the area.)

Oké then.... This is what I call a nice surprise !

The Slopes at Gilze-Rijen, The Mach Loop in Wales, the Cornfield range at the Wadden and now the GLV-5 area. Operational spotting (away from airbase take-off, taxi and landing zones) is getting more and more interesting these days.

Thanks for the detailed info. I will be trying my luck soon.

Cheers,
Iwan

It really is a wondefull place. Even without the Apache's it was beautiful!

@Alex: I was a bit more to the left.

To all: thanx for your comments!

Sven

The slopes are within base limits so I wouldn't count that one ;)
And indeed Cornfield is outside actual base infrastructure, but it still is confined.
