Flights between AMS and AUH will indeed commence on May 15th.
Schedule is as follows:
AUH-AMS EY077 0930-1340
AMS-AUH EY078 2200-0635
Both KL and EY will operate the route. With the frequency increase of KL, the route will be flown double daily by KL and EY, with codeshare on both flights.

As ETIHAD codeshares with many airlines on its other AUH-Europe-AUH flights it will be very interesting to see whether the following airlines will now also commence codeshares to AMS. Some codes would be new to the airport:

So it will stay at AMS all afternoon and evening. What is the purpose of Etihad doing this?

KLM already operates a daily flight on which Etihad codeshares, which departs AMS in the morning, arrives in AUH during the evening, departs after midnight and arrives back in AMS early morning. The timing of the Etihad flight allows for different connections both in AMS and AUH.
Etihad operates similar timings to other destinations like BRU and FRA.
Air France has reduced its capacity plans for Nantes-AMS-Nantes this summer, by replacing the E70 on the morning and evening rotation with the smaller EMB145.
El Al changed their 737-800 morning flights into 767-300s for the whole summer. On the mondays and fridays from 24th of June until the 4th of October they operate this flight with a 747-400.
Also an extra sunday morning flight, arriving at 01:00 (LT) and departing 02:30 from 30th of June until the 8th of September.
Arkia is coming with their 757-300 again this summer from 5th of April until the 25th of October on mondays and fridays with extra flights on wednesday 17th and 31th of July and 17th of August.
Israir however withdrew her slots for this summer.
SAS /SK currently plans to op flights cph-ams-cph with a mix of A319/320/321, CRJ900, MD80 and B717 (ex Blue1)
During Apr'13 only 10 flights planned to be op by MD80.
