Question Ba Yi

Last year at the Dubai Airshow I saw the Chinese demoteam Ba Yi. They fly the J-10 fighter. Some logs reports them as J-10A and others as J-10AY. What is the difference between J-10A and J-10AY?

Hi Flyboy, thanks for your reply but this is not correct. J-10AY is not a twin seater. J-10S or SY is a dual. So there is an other difference.

The J-10 serves with the PLAAF (insert number of aircraft) The J-10 exists in 8 variants:
J-10A: is the first generation version powered by either the WS-10 or AL-31FN turbofan.
J-10S: the combat capable 2-seat version of the A.
J-10AY: a variant unarmed specially developed for the PLAAF’s August 1st display team (similar to the A).
J-10SY: the twin-seat version of the J-10AY.
J-10AH: the single seat variant in service with the PLANAF.
J-10SH: twin seat verision ins service with the PLANAF.
J-10B: an upgraded version of the J-10A.
FC-20: an export version intended for Pakistan.

But what are the differences visialy?
According scramble database they flew first with J-10AY and J-10SY and now with J-10A and J-10S. Those latter are different with other c/n’s. Now I want to know: Did I see J-10.Y’s or not.

Maybe a silly responce, but I think it is save to assume that all the planes used are the "Y" variant. The same as all the MB339's of Frecce are the "PAN" variant and return to "A's" when returned to normal operations.

The F-18's of the Blue's are modified as are the F-16's of the Thunderbirds though they do not change the type's designation. Same for the Reds who do rotate aircraft as the Italians.

Interesting thread, especially as no list above is correct :-)

J-10: initial prototypes, see the streamlined nosewheel door (xx0y serials with CAC (xx=10, y starts at 1))
J-10A: pre-production + production single-seater for Air Force (xx1y with CAC)
J-10AH: J-10A's with the Navy
J-10AY: J-10A for Ba Yi. One initial batch + some replacements later. Replaced by Ba Yi in 2017 by new J-10A with demo mods, whereabouts unknown
J-10S: Dual seat, four used within a Regiment,up to eight within a Brigade. (xx2x with CAC)
J-10SH: J-10S with the Navy
J-10SY: J-10S for Ba Yi. One initial batch + some replacements later. Replaced by Ba Yi in 2017 by new J-10S with demo mods, whereabouts unknown
J-10B: Aerodynamically + technically upgraded single seater (xx3x with CAC)
J-10C: J-10B with further improvements.
J-10B TVC: J-10B prototype, now with thrust vectoring engine in test/demo phase.

But unfortunately, I don't know why Ba Yi got brand new aircraft last year.

Because the AY/SY aircraft haven't been noted anywhere, they remain with status 'active' in the Scramble database, although given the f/n and l/n dates people can conclude which one is most likely to be seen.

Thanks for this answer. At older pics they have smokepods under the wings, but these disappeared a couple years ago.

Although I have never seen pictures where these smokepods were used (except recently with the J-10B TVC), they were used on the aircraft in 2015/2016 when a few standard aircraft had to be added to compensate for crashed ones. These new aircraft had no engine exhaust injection system.
