Wow Rob, some very nice catches of the dragonlady at Alconbury:-)
To continue with Alconbury I have some aerial views of a portion of the base, showing the main runway and hangar area. The 10th Tactical Fighter Wing, U.S. Air Force Europe (USAFE), and TR-1 aircraft of the 17th Reconnaissance Wing, Strategic Air Command (SAC), are based at Alconbury.

An air-to-air left side view of an RF-4 Phantom II aircraft flown by the 10th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing, flanked by two F-5 Tiger II aircraft flown by the 527th Tactical Fighter Training Squadron. All the aircraft are assigned to units of the 3rd Air Force, based at RAF Alconbury.

Hello everybody!

First thank you to everyone who put his effort in this topic!
Some nice an impressive material you uploaded to this topic.
Specially the last post from AK01, wonderfull!

We will continue the saga on the coldwar USAFE with some "Desert ready" aardvarcks which took off from Lakenheath heading to Saudi Arabia.

A 48th Tactical Fighter Wing F-111F aircraft stands outside its hangar prior to deploying to Saudi Arabia in support of Operation Desert Shield.

A 48th Tactical Fighter Wing F-111F aircraft dubbed the "Miss Liberty" taxis from its hangar as it prepares for deployment to Saudi Arabia to take part in Operation Desert Shield. The aircraft is armed with a Paveway laser-guided bomb on the outside pylon and a GBU-15 modular glide bomb on the inside pylon.

A 48th Tactical Fighter Wing F-111F aircraft taxis to the flight line as it prepares to depart for Saudi Arabia in support of Operation Desert Shield. The aircraft is equipped with an AIM-9 Sidewinder missile.

I've always tried to imagine how that looked like in the Cold War days, but this is the first time I've ever seen a picture of it! Are there more images available about this topic?

Somewhere on the Scramble Forum there was a pic (or even video) of an NF-5 on the Ahlhorn highway-strip.
I searched, but unfortunately cannot find it anymore.

Yes, then those A-10's would end up in the same traffic jam as I do every morning...

Off topic but FYI
These videos and pictures are from the exercise "Highway 84" which lasted 3 weeks. Air forces from Germany, US, UK, Holland, Denmark, Norway and Belgium participated. Some aircraft (1 F-4, 1 F-16 and 1 F-104 were damaged during landing accidents) The 104 was so damaged it could not take off by itself anymore. In total 2400 movements of which 400 take offs and landings and over 1200 touch and go's were made. Imagine standing there for 3 weeks with your camera. :shock:

Today both sides of the road are fully grown with trees so even if they wanted to they can not use it anymore .

Maybe a bit off topic but have a look at this month airforces monthly pg 19. the 82nd ATRS are now flying the QF-4 as towing aircraft for target banners instead of the usial civillian contracted learjets from Tyndall AFB saving $750000 annually.
Every little helps i suppose :wink:
