Punta Arenas is the capital of Chile’s southernmost region, Magallanes and Antartica Chilena. It is the largest city in southern Chile and of strategic importance. The airport is also the starting point for flights to Antarctica of which there are many in the Summer season, carrying both passengers and cargo. Day-tours even exist to King George Island. Punta Arenas handles quite a large number of passengers per year, mainly flying on LAN Airlines and Sky Airline. The Chilean Air Force maintains an interesting presence too, with based F-5E/F Tiger IIs and a varying mix of fixed-wing and rotary aircraft.
The air base covers quite a large area west of the Straint of Magellan. It has three runways, more or less in a triangle shape. Only the east-west runway has a taxiway along the runway. North of this runway there are some inactive dispersals of the Chilean Air Force. On the south side of this runway you will find on the most western apron the cargo and Aerovias DAP apron. The civil terminal is in the south east corner of runways 07/25 and 01/19. On the most eastern side of the airport you will find the barracks and maintenance area of the air force.
Basically the only way the get to Punta Arenas is by plane. There are some roads leading to Punta Arenas, but all go from isle to isle via Argentina. In order to fly to Punta Arenas one could only fly from Santiago as no international flights are oper- ated from the airport, except in high season, when there are some flights to Ushaia, which is the most southern city in the world.
This photo illustrates the restricted view from the terminal at airside, due to gates extending left and right. (Rob van Ringelesteijn)
