General

El Bosque is without a doubt of major significance to Chilean military aviation. It is the first military air base and therefore birth ground of the air force. It still holds the air force academy as well as the ENAER aircraft factory and several technical and logistics unit of the air force.

Layout

The airfield has a single north-south runway. Clockwise, the north east corner holds the technical school (EdE), south of that is the air force academy (EdA), south of that ENAER resides. On the other side of the runway, in the south west, the logistics depot (DdA) has its barracks.

Getting There

The airfield is in the south western suburbs of Santiago. It can be reached by taking either the Autopista Central, exiting at Av. Los Espejo, which also happens to be the original name of El Bosque. Then make a right onto Gran Avenida José Miguel Carrera, a busy road with a bus lane.
Alternatively you can enter the Vespucio Sur eastbound highway and take the La Cisterna exit.

Around the Airport

1EdE gate - preserved aircraft

The east side gates all have preserved aircraft inside that can best be viewed by taking a stroll along the perimeter on Av José Miguel Carrera. The traffic is quite pacey, so you will probably need three passes by car to clearly see all the monuments.

First up is the Escuela de Especialidades. Just before their gate the Huey, pole mounted Mirage and T-37 are in view, south of the gate you will see the other Mirage and Hunter when you look back north.

2EdA gate - preserved aircraft

About 500 metres south from spot 1, the Escuela de Aviación has its gate. Looking in from the north you will just see the pole mounted T-35 in front of a building, far left; through the gate the T-34, T-6 and, in the back, the T-37, will be visible.

3South side approach and DdA view

You have to proceed south. After the airfield there is another walled-off area but after that you can make a right onto Volcán Osorno. This road under passes the approach to runway 02. Before that, near the sports field on the military terrain to your right, you can see some of the parked stored aircraft at the División de Abastecimiento-area.
From here you can view the approach, although 20 is the preferred runway. Relocating a bit east for afternoon light can be done easily here.

4DdA view

Continue on Volcán Osorno from spot 3. This road is not a through road and the only traffic here goes to the two military gates that are on opposite each other. Through the gate you can make some of the stored aircraft and see the preserved T-37. You drive on a bit towards he railway, but then you will obviously attract attention because there is no way out!

A better option is to return to Av. José Miguel Carrera and take the Av. Lo Blanco. After passing the railway, make a left northbound on Av. Ochagavia. Then make a right into a small street called Garcés Gana. This will lead to the other side of the railway. park your car, cross the railway on foot and you will be on Volcán Osorno again. From the railway embankment and several heaps of rubbish in the street you can look over the wall. The preserved Hunter is in easy view and so are the stored aircraft on the East and North side of the eastern most hangar.

5North side view

The airfield is quite enclosed by residential areas build up right to the perimeter wall. Go back on Av. José Miguel Carrera north bound. Take the first through road left, this should be Luis Barro Borgoño. From here, several dead end streets lead the the airfield wall. You can have a peek over, to gain a distant view of the Pilláns on the ramp. Try several streets, also more to the west, around the corner.
Landing aircraft will be overhead and only shortly in view here.
