General

Roskilde is Copenhagen's second airport. Originally planned as a relief airport for Kastrup, it opened in 1973; but until now, it has few scheduled flights. However, Roskilde is home to more than half of the Danish general aviation scene and therefore worth a visit. Possibilities for taking pictures of flying activity are not great at Roskilde, that said, airshows are occasionally organized.

Layout

Roskilde has two cross-runways 03/21 and 11/29. All facilities can be found in the north western quadrant. Although the land is flat, it is hard to find a good spot near one of the four thresholds. Lines of trees often obstruct your view. Moreover, views are often distant, and taking good photos of aircraft on one of the runways is almost impossible.

Getting There

The airport is located about 30 km west of Copenhagen. It can be reached from the city by following highway E20/E55 westbound. Coming from Jylland (Jutland) take the same highway eastbound. At the Roskilde exit, take road no.6 to Roskilde, which will pass the airport on the west side.

Around the Airport

1Main apron, taxiway & approach 21 - west side

Probably the best spot to view activities at Roskilde, is in the terminal area. Views of the main apron can be had around the terminal, although your view on the taxiway leading to threshold 11 is blocked by trees. From the main parking lot, views of approach 21 are possible, but taking pictures is limited to the end of the day, since this spot is on the west side of the runway. From the road parallel of the main entrance road, views can be obtained on the taxiways connecting the general aviation area with the runways. Photography over here is good during most of the day, since you are positioned south of the action.

2General aviation ramps - west side

From spot 1, head to the general aviation area, a small road leads outside along the airfield perimeter on the west side and offers good views between the numerous sheds and hangars in the general aviation area. The SAR detachment of the RDAF can be found in this corner of the airfield as well.

3Approach 29 - south side

From spot 2, follow the small road to the Tjærebyvej and turn right to Tune. In Tune, take a sharp right turn to Snoldelev. This road, aptly named Snoldelevvej, passes threshold 29, but at a considerable distance. Position yourself somewhere south of the centreline to prevent trees from obstructing your view of the approach. Small aircraft tend to be still fairly high here though.

4Approach 03 - west side

Another option is spot 4, although photography is only good in the late afternoon. Again, your view is obstructed by trees along the main road connecting the highway with Roskilde.
