General

Abu Suwayr houses an F-16 wing of the Egypt AF.

Be aware, plane spotting is neither understood nor appreciated in Egypt!

Layout

The base used to be an RAF station and remnants of its WWII infrastructure are still visible. It has two east-west runways, of which 09-27 is the preferred one. Many drive-thorough double shelters house the F-16s. At the thresholds there are some alert shelters as well, the south east ones are quite close to the fence, see spot 1.

Getting There

The base can be easily found, but also easily missed! It is just north of the Zagazig-Ismailiah road along the Ismailiah canal that also runs past Bilbays. Abu Suwayr is about 20km west-south west of Ismailiah. However, the signposts are mostly in Arabic. Abu Suwayr is only signposted when coming from Ismailiah. Anyway, opposite a bridge over the canal there is a road leading into the centre of the village. The gate is left immediately after the rail road crossing.

Around the Airport

1Gate and shelter view

After passing the rail road the gate will be on your left. There is a road that goes to a secondary gate and this continues along the fence. But for a view of the approach and in front of the shelters, do not drive towards the gate but continue on the main road. The fence is covered with maths from the inside, but there are enough gaps to provide a view on the shelters.

2East side approach

For a spot in the approach continue along the fence and make a right after the buildings stop on your right hand side. This is approximately 800 metres from the start of the fence line at 30°34'19.28"N, 32° 6'55.16"E. Make a right again. You can now watch the approach over some fields. If you do not like to be this close to the village, you can reposition yourself more to the east.

3West side approach

This spot has not been visited yet. It will be difficult to find a road crossing the rail road. There should be one about 3.8 km west of the road to spot 1, at 30°33'11.13"N, 32° 4'47.57"E. You will have to make your way through two villages, roughly keeping a north westerly direction. The road will become increasingly smaller. At a t-junction, 30°34'3.04"N, 32° 4'1.49"E, make a right towards the base and try to find an inconspicuous spot.
