General

Al Mansurah is a military air base. It houses a wing of the Egypt AF flying with MiG-21 and J-7 fighter aircraft.

Be aware, plane spotting is neither understood nor appreciated in Egypt!

Layout

The air base has runways forming a V-shape. The northwest-southeast runway is a parallel one whereas the eastern one is a single north-south runway. Shelters and small ramps are situated near the runway thresholds. Preferable runway is 32R.

Getting There

The air base is east of the main road that runs from Al Mansurah to the south, towards Simballawein and Zagazig. There or not too many opportunities to exit and cross the rail road. There is one close to the base perimeter and a crossing about 2 km further to the South which is a safer bet.

Around the Airport

1South side approach - far

Take the exit of the Al Mansurah-Zagazig that is about 10 km south of Al Mansurah, at 30°56'15.97"N, 31°25'56.94"E. The road bends sharply left and then sharp right again. About 375 metres after that, there is a farm track to the left, go in there. You will be about 1.5 km from the threshold and 500 metres south west of the centreline.

2South side approach - close

There is a road closer to the perimeter, in fact there is a small village built against the perimeter. Just south of the road, after it has bend around the threshold, there are some farm tracks. Pick one, but beware because you will be in full sight of the road that is often used by the military. This road meets the main road so it is possible to enter here as well, but the entrance is rather obscure.

3North side approach 14R/L

To reach the other approach, head north again towards Al Mansurah. At the end of the airfield perimeter the road crosses a canal, make a right onto the track before crossing the water. The road bends left over a smaller bridge, stay on the south side and go into the farmland a bit. This spot has not been used yet.

4Northeast side approach 17

From spot 3, follow the canal eastward, on either side. If the track is not negotiable, go a bit North first, until you reach a bigger road, just north west of a small village, and make a right. This will take you back to the canal. Position yourself along the canal somewhere, the south seems the best option for that.
