General

Beni Suef is a military base housing an F-16 wing.

Be aware, plane spotting is neither understood nor appreciated in Egypt!

Layout

The base has a very peculiar footprint. There is a main north-south runway with a parallel taxiway that bears the same numbers. This might indicate it is the old runway or can be used as back-up. To the north of this, there is a smaller south west-north east runway. The main runway has drive through shelters near the thresholds.
There is an old taxiway all the way south. There are some skeletons of large hangars in the disused dispersals too.

Getting There

From the north western outskirts of Beni Suef take the road to El Fayyum and Lahun. After 11 km you can go straight were the road bends left. This leads to spot 1 and 2. Unfortunately, this road continues over the base and is not accessible. So for the other side of the base, use the through road. There is a railway crossing after 11 km and after that th road bends right and reaches Lahun in a couple of km. For spots 3 and 4, go right before the bridge, over the dam, and right again. Follow the canal for 3 km until you can cross it. This road leads to spot 3 and 4.
Alternatively, when coming from El Fayyum, after visiting Kom Awshim for example, take the eastern ring road around El Fayyum. Exit at the large roundabout on the south side. After 2 km take the road that forks off to the left. Fifteen km down this road you will reach Lahun bridge.

Around the Airport

1South side shelter area

Just before reaching the guard post blocking the road over the base, you can go right towards a small village. Some of the huge shelters of the south eastern shelter area are quite close now. When aircraft are parked outside, they should be readable.

2South side approach

By going left in front of the gate you will be under the approach to runway 01. The aircraft will be just overhead, so not ideal.

3North west approach

After leaving Lahun along the canal and crossing it, you will reach another smaller canal. About 350 metres left you can cross that one too. Take the first possibility left at the edge of the village. You will then be on a piece of barren land behind a shelter and south of the approach to runway 06. We doubt that this part of the base is still used though.

4North east approach

For the north east approach to runway 24, do not pass the last canal mentioned at spot 3, but stay on the northern bank. Following this track, you will be driving parallel to the runway. After 2.75 km you have to cross to the southern bank. You will under pass the approach to runway 19, albeit distant. At the fork take the right leg towards the shelters at the threshold of runway 24. After about 600 metres the track goes right and you will be okay for runway 24. But as stated before, runway 01 is the main runway.
Spots 3 and 4 have not been validated.

5East side tracks

On the east side of the base, there are several sand tracks right along the fence line. Basically, these connect spot 1 and 4. This part has not been visited and there are many military installations on that side. But it could provide a better view on the base and shelters.
