The airfield houses the air force academy with loads of basic and advanced training aircraft as well as numerous stored aircraft.
Be aware, plane spotting is neither understood nor appreciated in Egypt!
North side
The airfield used to have five runways, laid down in a triangle. Basically, these were two sets of parallel runways, and a long north-south one. Nowadays, only four seem to be in use. Near the thresholds of runways 17L/R some shelters can be found. To the north east of runway 22, a taxi way with drive through shelters is situated. Stored aircraft are parked in front of the shelters. On the west and east side of runway 35L, ramps and maintenance hangars can be found. Training aircraft are parked on various ramps. These are in the centre of the airfield.
South side
The south east corner has an area that holds regular shelters. Along the southern leg of the triangle a flight line is situated. In the south west of the airfield again some drive through shelters can be found along more standard shelters but also a taxi track leading to a separate area west of the southern access road. This off-base ramp and dispersal area is used for storage.
Take number 45 road out of Cairo to the northeast towards Bilbays. You can reach this by taking the Ismailiya Desert Road from Cairo International Airport. Although it is no.04 road on maps, the sign posts along it are marked 67M. About 2,5 kilometres after the fly-over near the military side of Cairo International you will have to make a left. This is after the entrance to the Cairo Ring Road. The entrance to the Bilbays road is rather obscure, make a U-turn after the Shell gas station. Back track and go right. The first part does not look like a highway but after the houses the road bends left and some sand dunes appear. Shortly after there is a toll booth. This road leads past Inchas as well. After the second toll booth you arrive at a roundabout were a Su-7 is preserved. We will use this as a marker for the rest of this guide.
Another option is to continue on the Ismailiya Desert Road for about 33 kilometres from the aforementioned fly-over. Take the exit and make a left on the roundabout under passing the highway. The exit only has Arabic sign posts, the next big one is at 10th of Ramadan city, you can backtrack from there if necessary. You will now enter No.401 road. This leads to the same Su-7 roundabout.
