General

Gebel el Basur is home to the Mirage fleet of the Egyptian Air Force. It is situated some 85 km north west of Cairo, 20 km north east of the Cairo-Alexandria Desert road.

Be aware, plane spotting is neither understood nor appreciated in Egypt!

Layout

The base has a modern lay-out. It features two north-south runways with most shelters on the south side, part of which are of the drive-through kind. Each threshold has about eight alert shelters too.
The south side has some more taxi tracks and dispersals but they seem to be disused, so we have omitted them from our map.

Getting There

At the Bîr Hooker intersection of the Cairo-Alexandria Desert road, there is a large Master petrol station. Go north east here, at 30°23'46.29"N, 30°22'24.15"E and continue for about 20 km on this road. The airfield will appear on your right just after the vegetation starts again and past the exit to Qaryet el Nagah.

Around the Airport

1South side approach - p.m.

About 1 km before the airfield perimeter starts, you can make a right. This road runs past plantations and rounds the southern threshold. There is an entrance to a track leading between some of the plantations at 30°30'26.31"N, 30°33'6.50"E. Although it is private property, it is about the only place out of sight from the main road.

2South side approach - a.m.

Runway 33 is the preferred runway by far. For morning light, continue on the main road as described under spot 1. Immediately after it bends south, away from the airfield, you will have to find your spot. Best option is to leave your car and position yourself behind some of the sparse bushes here.

3North side approach - p.m.

This is probably not much use, but after passing the airfield you will be at a cross road. The base is to your right, but you can also go straight. After crossing, you should try to find a spot on the left hand side. Be advised, the cross road is surrounded by military terrain on three sides! Moreover, runway 15 is barely used.

4North side approach - a.m.

The northern side of the base is bordered by a through road. Just after the airfield perimeter ends, you can make a left. This road runs back to the north west under passing the approach to runway 18 and eventually leading to the approach of runway 15, albeit distant; about 2 km from the centreline and 3 km from the threshold at the back of some military barracks.

5East side view from plantations

This is a spot for the patient ones with off road talent as well. About 4.5 km past the gate, there is a small road right, at 30°33'35.15"N, 30°36'10.81"E. Enter here, and then make a right again after approximately 2.4 km, at 30°32'17.20"N, 30°36'2.71"E. After 900 metres the 'through' road, actually a sand track, goes left and so should you. Go right again after an S-turn, you will now be driving towards the airfield perimeter. There are some farms close to the perimeter, so you should probably keep your distance here. The end of this road is about 1.5 km east of one of the main ramps and even closer to some shelters, although the base is surrounded by an earth wall obviously. If you make a left about halfway down, you should be in a better position, provided that this road is not closed off.
This spot should also be reachable from the road past the southern perimeter, but this was not tried out.

Alternatively, you can also follow the sand path adjacent to the fence from the southern perimeter. This will attract a lot of attention and will probably only be wise with a 4x4 vehicle.
