General

Inshas is the second fighter air base near Cairo and holds an F-16 wing. It is situated 25 km north-east of Cairo and 10 km south-west of Bilbays air base.

Be aware, plane spotting is neither understood nor appreciated in Egypt!

Layout

The airfield has two runways, a east-west one that appears to be disused, and a south west-north east one. Preferred runway is 04. Some remnants of old infrastructure are still there, notably a north-south runway. But the base received a total make-over when the F-16s arrived. Modern drive-through shelters house the fighter aircraft.
The area east of the base is dotted with military camps and although most maps show roads up to the east perimeter, this is not reachable.

Getting There

Once you are on the Bilbays road it is easy, but the entrance to this road is a bit tricky. See also the "Getting There" section of Bilbays.
From Cairo Int'l airport follow the signposts to the Cairo-Ismailiya Desert road. About 2 km north-east from the fly-over adjacent to the northern airport perimeter, there is a busy bus stop, with a pedestrian bridge. Shortly after, there is an exit to the Cairo northern ring road. Do not take that but continue. There is a Shell petrol station on your right and 1 km after that, you have to make a U-turn which is possible at a purpose-built opening in the divider. Now track back for 1.5 km and go right. This looks a bit like an ordinary street but is in actual fact the entry to the Bilbays road. It is even signposted 'Bilbes'. This is road no.45 and on most maps it originates from the ring road, but in actual fact it does not.
After 15 km, with some large blue-roofed fruit canning factories on your right, there is a road to the left; signposted Inchas. Make a legal U-turn and enter that road. It runs past the west side of the base.

Around the Airport

1West side approach

Only one decent spot, but it happens to be a very good one. At the last red bricked wall of the small build-up area, about 300 metres from the threshold, you can make a left. After 150 metres there is a small clearing on the left. Although you are in full view of the small metal factories, the people are mostly curious and hospitable instead of suspicious. Nonetheless, it is no place to sway around large bins or cameras. Luckily, you can read the approaching F-16s off without using a binocular.
You can venture a bit further west past the build-up area, but then you will be very close to another military camp.
