General

Jiyanklis is also known as Gianaclis or even Genaclis, which is due to differences in transliteration. It is yet another air base refurbished when the new F-16s were delivered. Situated in the middle of nowhere, some 20 km north east of the Cairo-Alexandria Desert road.

Be aware, plane spotting is neither understood nor appreciated in Egypt!

Layout

The base sports two east-west runways, converging by some ten degrees. Many shelters of various types can be found around the thresholds and along the southern taxiway. They range from bulky drive-through examples housing four F-16s, to dual drive-through shelters and single traditional ones. The base is built on the remains of the former air base, remnants of which are still present just east of the present perimeter.
On a flying day, the aircraft are usually parked in front of these offering some opportunities to see and read them from outside the base.

Getting There

Easiest is to approach from the aforementioned Cairo-Alexandria Desert road. Simply follow the north side of a large canal, the entry of this road is at 30°42'11.79"N, 030° 2'48.39"E. Proceed past two hydroelectric power stations. Before you reach no.3, make a right at the start of the airfield perimeter, crossing the canal. You will now be driving on a road that will become progressively more sandy.

Alternatively, you can try to approach from the east, from Tanta and Al Mansurah for example. It is doable, but not advisable given the myriad of roads and canals and lack of proper road signs.

Around the Airport

1East side approach

The track south of the base leads past several agricultural fields and plantations and gets increasingly rural and quiet. Position yourself east of the threshold and you will be very close to the 29 and 30 approach, easy to read off serials with a small binocular.

2South east side view

'Wow, that is close', will undoubtedly be your reaction while following the track to spot 1. Tracking back west, you can stop on several occasions to view the aircraft parked around the south east group of drive-through shelters. Beware of the watchtowers and 'loose' guards, probably best not to leave the car. However, you also have to be careful not to run it aground in the sand, so pick your stopping points with caution...

3South west side view

Same story as spot 2, a bit more to the west. You will be opposite a military compound south of the track, so be extra careful here. For some of the aircraft, you have to stop very close to the gate of this compound. Try to keep the bushes near the gate between you and the sentry.

4North west view

Not tried out yet, but by following sand tracks clockwise around the airfield, navigating along and around canals, you probably can look onto the base as well. The west side approach is very open and the road to the gate is there as well. Because 29 and 30 are by far the preferred runways, no use lingering here.

5North view

Not tried, but the north east group of shelters looks reachable. From various sand tracks along canals leading to farms, some peeks at the shelters are likely to be possible.
