General

Kom Awshim is a military airfield currently housing the Chinook fleet.

Be aware, plane spotting is neither understood nor appreciated in Egypt!

Layout

Although the base has two north-south runways, they seem to date back to its fighter days. The ramps and parking spots for the helicopters are situated east of the runways. Because there is very little hangar space, nearly all of the Chinooks are always parked outside!
North east of the base there are marshes, so the large blue patch is not a real lake. There are some tracks leading to and through that area but these probably belong to plantations or the military.

Getting There

The airfield is 65 km south west of Cairo, along the road to Al Fayyum. Take a left at the large roundabout north of the pyramids ;-). Keep your eyes peeled, because you will be able to catch a glimpse of the Chinooks on your right hand side after passing the industrial estate and before the road leading to the gate and south side.

Around the Airport

1East side view - industrial estate

The industrial estate offers views of the Chinooks. The south westernmost tip seems to be the best place. Early morning light is needed and you will not be able to read them all.
From the north west side of the industrial estate, you can theoretically hike to spot 5.

2South west side view - Village entrance

Some 700 metres south of the industrial estate, there is an exit road from the Cairo-Al Fayyum road. Take this, it leads towards a gate guarded by a Su-20. The road sways left, around the gate north west bound. Just after entering the small village there is a view on the helicopters. Again, you cannot read them all at once.

Ideal light for spot 2 through 4 would be evening light, but the village is rather crowded then. Moreover, the heat waves tend to diminish only at dusk-point, so your window of opportunity is rather small. You would be better doing your thing in the early morning hours.

3South west side view - Soccer pitch

Smack in the centre of the village, there is a playing field on a small plateau overlooking the base. From here you have a more unobstructed view, also on the ones parked furthest away. Again, avoid swarms of playing kids in the evening by coming here at dawn.

4South west view - Village exit

Just after leaving the village on the north west side, you are a bit more elevated. This is just before the road sinks a couple of yards and bushes and buildings on the base start blocking your view. It probably takes driving a bit up and down to find a good spot here. It will only give a better angle on the westernmost Chinooks. Mind you, the locals, if present, will have noticed your car driving to and fro by now ;-)

5East side view - Along fence

This spot was not checked. It will be hard to reach given the fact that there are only sand tracks to approach from the east. Easiest will be to walk from the industrial estate, along the fence. You will then stand out like the proverbial sore thumb though... Venturing into the tracks by car might be do-able, but you should probably stick to spot 1 and 3 to clear most of them in a couple of minutes rather than spending an hour finding the last one.
