General

Ansbach, or Katterbach Kaserne Army Heliport, houses US Army Europe heavy transport and attack reconnaisance helicopter units. It is one of the US Army Garrison Ansbach (USAG) installations and the headquarters of the 12th Combat Aviation Brigade.

Layout

The airfield is dominated by a huge ramp and some large hangars on the north side. There is a small east-west runway. South of that, there is a housing area. The airfield is slightly higher than its direct surroundings. This and the buildings as well as some bushes makes spotting difficult here.

Getting There

Katterbach is east of Ansbach. It can be reached by taking the B14 road from Ansbach to Nürnberg. Ansbach itself is situated north of the A6 highway between Heilbronn and Nürnberg.

Around the Airport

1North side ramp view from trees

Yes, you have to do some climbing to catch a glimpse of the helicopters here. When entering Katterbach, go right just before the base perimeter starts. Make a right at the end of the track and scale one of the small trees here. No good for photography obviously.

2East side ramp view

Go back to the B14 road and proceed past the base. Make a right towards Neukirchen on the road with the same name (An12). Just before you reach Neukirchen, there is a small tree-lined road to your right. This is a bit higher than the ramp and might yield some serials with morning light and no heat haze. Most helicopters are tail-on though.

3East side approach

Should you wish to sit and wait for incoming helicopters, then follow the small road along the western outskirts of Neukirchen. You can go closer to the fence, but then you will have to enter the fields.

4West side approach

Same story as with spot 3. Take the road from the B14 towards Untereichenbach. This is the only feasible exit to the right between Obereichenbach and Katterbach. Find a spot, roughly at the open space between the northern and southern buildings on base.
