Donauwörth Heliport, not far from Munich, is one of the two main facilities of Airbus' helicopter division, the other one being in Marseille. About 3400 people work here to build and maintain helicopters, including the former Eurocopter and MBB models. The small airfield is located on the southwest outskirts of town. People passing by the airfield using the B16 road have a remarkably good view of the numerous helicopters which can be found here. Donauwörth is the home of the EC135 and EC145 as well as the NH90 military transport helicopter and the Tiger attack helicopter.
Being a factory airfield, most of the site is occupied by large assembly buildings. Airside is relatively open, though the runway and flight line are located on the southwestern part of the complex.
This factory is a must visit if you already are in the neighbourhood, let us say if you are already at Neuburg or Ingolstadt-Manching. Coming from Munich, take the A9 in northern direction. Take exit 63 (which is the same as for Ingolstadt Manching) and follow the B16 in the direction to Neuburg. This will bring you along Neuburg airbase indeed. Continue the B16, following the signs to Donauworth and you will see the airfield on your right hand side. After passing the field, take the first exit on your right.
If you park car near spot 1 and walk a bit along the B16, you will see some great opprtunties to take pictures. This one has been taken at spot 3. From here you can't see the entire runway so be aware of surprises.. (Frank Noort, 12 may 2006)
Also worthwhile is spot 4, near the bridge from where you have an overview of the field because you are positioned a bit higher there. This EC-135 was shot from spot4. (Frank Noort, 12 may 2006)
