General

This base northeast of München houses the Wehrtechnische Dienststelle für Luftfahrzeuge- und Musterprüfwesen für Luftfahrgerät der Bundeswehr 61 (or just WTD61 ...). This test unit operates various types of German military aircraft. Also located here are the German production facilities of EADS, currently producing the EF2000 Eurofighter and overhauling the Airbus A400. Overhaul of Tornados and EF2000s is performed by Luftwaffe unit Systemzentrum 14. Civilian aviation is taken care of by the Ingolstadt Manching Airport comapny (IMA), handling bizjets and bizprops.

Layout

The base has two parallel runways and all related stuff is located inbetween. Most of the buildings are located near the southern runway but the General Aviation platform is near the northern runway (25R). The northern runway is only used when the southern one is closed (due to repairs or during special tests).

Getting There

You can get to the base by travelling the A9 Highway and exit this at 'Manching'. From there you head for Regensburg via road number B16 and the base shows up automatically on your right.

Around the Airport

1IMA

The first location is a good spot for having a look at the General Aviation area. The platform is located near the threshold of runway 25R. Photography is OK from here on runway 25R when in use. You can reach this spot by turning right from the B16 (towards IMA) after passing the base.

2East side approach 25L

A nice location for landing shots. You have a clear view of the runway and you can position yourself to your liking for landing aircraft. This position can be reached by continuing the road you used while visiting spot 1. There is a small road that follows the fence of the base that automatically leads you to this position.

3Threshold 25L

Just around the corner (of the base) you will find this position that offers opportunities to picture the aircraft on the runway during take-off. For fighters at least 300mm analogue is needed. Bring a small step ladder to get above the base fence.
Following the fence by car is only possible for a short stretch, it continues as a foot and bicycle path. If you leave the car, walk across the small bridge and along the fence you will eventually reach spot 4.

4EADS platform

From this position, that is only accessible by bicycle or on foot, you can have a look at the platforms of EADS across the runway and read (some of) the aircraft that are outside. It is no good for photography. You can reach this spot by following the fence from spot 3. By car, it is only possible for a short stretch, it continues as a foot and bicycle path. If you leave the car, walk across the small bridge and along the fence you will reach spot 4. It can also be reached from spot 5, but it is a longer walk.

5West side approach 07R

This location is OK for photography and grabbing the serials if they operate runway 07R. You can reach this spot be either exiting the B16 to the right just after you exit the A9 highway.
Alternatively, continue from spot 3 on the ST2335 road to Forstwiesen. Either way, it is a full breaks turn into the path along the fence!

6Look onto EADS aprons

You can have a look onto some of the EADS aprons. From spot 5, take a right onto ST2335 keeping the airport at your right. Now take the first road right onto the road called Am Wald. Along this road there is opportunity - when using the southern road here - to peek into the EADS hangar. Tails of German Eurofighters present here can be read but their c/n only. It is hit and run as you cannot park the car here alongside the road for a long time.
At the end of the road is the gate towards the military part of Ingolstadt. If you look to your right, you will see some aprons with aircraft ready to spot. Turn back at the gate and keep left following the southern road to spot the last aircraft.

7Look onto shelters

Ingolstadt houses many ex-military aircraft and most of them are positioned in the northwestern shelter complex. To see them, from spot 1, you will have to take a left onto B16 keeping the airport at your left. Take the third to the right, onto PAF19 towards Manching, and take a direct right again onto the small road parallel to B16. Here, park your car at any good spot to look into the shelters.

Shot from position 2, this photo shows both the local military traffic and the nice opportunities for pics. (Join)
