Laage is one of the small number of former East German air force bases that is still in use with the German Air Force. It became the home of the 73rd Geschwader with its Eurofighters. Furthermore, civilian use kicked in rather soon after the reunification of Germany and nowadays uses the field as Rostock Airport-the Baltic Port, serving all sorts of traffic in modest amounts.
The typical rectangular former East German air force structure is still well-recogniseable, although much of it has been taken out of use. Three locations north of the east-west runway hold the Eurofighter 'barns', locally called boxes. The civilian facilities are south of the runway, mainly around the apron there. The nearby dispersal area is still used for helicopters. There are many patches of forest both inside and outside the airfield, and hardly any roads close to the western halve, resulting in very few options to spot anything around the field.
The airfield perimeter touches motorway A19 between Rostock and Berlin, where an old taxiway even used to be connected to it. The nearest exit is south of there at Kritzkow, less than 5 km from the terminal, and the airport will be signposted.
