General

Laage is one of the small number of former East German air force bases that is still in use with the German Air Force. It became the home of the 73rd Geschwader with its Eurofighters. Furthermore, civilian use kicked in rather soon after the reunification of Germany and nowadays uses the field as Rostock Airport-the Baltic Port, serving all sorts of traffic in modest amounts.

Layout

The typical rectangular former East German air force structure is still well-recogniseable, although much of it has been taken out of use. Three locations north of the east-west runway hold the Eurofighter 'barns', locally called boxes. The civilian facilities are south of the runway, mainly around the apron there. The nearby dispersal area is still used for helicopters. There are many patches of forest both inside and outside the airfield, and hardly any roads close to the western halve, resulting in very few options to spot anything around the field.

Getting There

The airfield perimeter touches motorway A19 between Rostock and Berlin, where an old taxiway even used to be connected to it. The nearest exit is south of there at Kritzkow, less than 5 km from the terminal, and the airport will be signposted.

Around the Airport

1Civil terminal

A new terminal was built early this century, replacing the initial one at the other edge of the apron. There is a cafe with a viewing terrace at its north corner, well situated for an overview of the field. This offers fine options for both photography and serials. The terrace closes rather early each day though, being open from 8.30 until 14.30LT. A small aviation history exhibition is part of the offerings as well and a few aircraft (including a replica) hang from the terminal ceiling. Finally, the front section of a MiG-21 was reported here but unconfirmed if it is still there.

2Final approach from the west

With prevailing winds, (photo) spotting on final approach is also an option. For this, take Bundesstraße 103 from Kritzkow to Kronskamp-Laage and park somewhere at a farm road turn-off (leave room for anyone to pass of course).

Frits Jongerman photographed the preserved Su-22 during the Tag der Offenen Tür in 2014 before it was moved to its current spot, replacing the once preserved MiG-23.
