General

This southern air base, previously home to all ECR Tornados of the Luftwaffe, now acts as an active reserve base. It does not offer the spots one would like to encounter as it only reveals some of its secrets to the interested eyes at both the northern and southern approaches. Photography is not very good. The base does house the Militärgeschichtliche Sammlung Lechfeld (MGS) that is open to the public once a month, or by appointment.

Layout

The airfield has a north-west orientation and is rather large. The west side holds a taxiway with shelters and the northeast side has the maintenance hangars and visitors ramp. More dispersal and shelter areas can be found all along the east side. The built-up areas and vegetation on the base obscure any view of these areas. Only the south side is open.

Getting There

The base can be reached by exiting the A8 highway at the exit Augsburg-West (exit 72) and use the B17 from there heading south. You will reach Lechfeld-Nord (near the base) after about 20 kilometres.

Around the Airport

1Schiessplatz

The southern approach is fairly open. It can be reached by taking the Schwabstadlerstraße from the B17 to Schwabstadl, Lichtenberg, and Scheuring. There is a dead-end street northward called the Ludger-Hölkerstraße. This is spot 1. Officially this road is on military terrain, as it is actually part of a shooting range. The aircraft will still be a bit high here.

2Near Klosterlechfeld

The next best option to spot 1. Standing on the edge of the the Schwabstadlerstraße, at the beginning of a farm road, you are not on the military terrain and photography is still an option. You will not make any reward-winning shots, though. Serials are no problem from here.

3Allotments

A better view on landings on 03 can be had from abeam the approach lights, along the hobby gardens at the Röthstraße. To reach this location from spot 2, continue over the B17, return via the next roundabout and then enter the B17 to the north. From spot 1, you can do this direclty. Take the first exit again and at the end of it, turn right twice, around the apartment blocks. This is the Röthstraße and some 275m down the straight part of it is a track between the allotments. Find a place to park and walk onto the wide open grass field. You will be able to shoot pictures of landing aircraft if there are any, 300 mm will do fine. Signs in the field tell you not to walk further, so comply with that to avoid problems. Aircraft taking off from runway 21 are a bit too high from this spot.

4West gate

The preserved Tornado can be seen here behind the gate, from the Landsberger Straße that parallels the B17. To get here from spot 3, just drive north along the base, do not enter the B17.

5Northern approach

The northern approach can be reached by taking the B17 North towards Augsburg and taking the 'Lechfeld Nord' exit. Drive past Lechfeld Nord on the street called Hergetterfeld. This road bends to the south and ends at a gate. From there you will be able to spot the approaching aircraft. The road forking off to the east also ends at a fence. Take note that this road is officially a military road.
Another option to get near this spot is to take the exit 'Gutshof Lechfeld' and take an agricultural road towards the spot.
From here you will need at least 300 mm effective to photograph the aircraft and they are a bit too high for nice pics. Reading the serials is no problem, though.

6South gate

The F-84 that is preserved here is just behind the gate on the left. Drive all the way up the Schiessplatz, east of spot 1, if you want to see it. This is not officially allowed.
