General

This southern Eurofighter base is located west of Ingolstadt, so close to Manching, adjacent to Neuburg an der Donau. It offers very good spotting opportunities, both for photography and logging serials. The base is compact, open and easily accessible.

Layout

The main shelter area is on the southeast, along the east-west runway. The northwest also holds a few shelters, hangars and 'barns'. All areas, apart from the north side, can be circumnavigated on small roads.

Getting There

The town of Neuburg an der Donau is situated west of Ingolstadt. The easiest way of getting to the base is from the A9 highway (from Fürth to München). If you exit this highway at the exit 63 'Manching' (South of Ingolstadt) you take road number B16 towards the west (Oberstimm) and follow this road until you pass Zell. The base is on your left just after Zell.

Around the Airport

127 approach

The approach of runway 27 is very open. Take the ND13 road (Alte Neuburger Strasse) that runs south from the B16 between Neuburg and Zell. There are several small asphalt roads leading to the base perimeter. Standing at the fence, you also have a decent look into the first part of the shelter areas. Steps are needed to take photos over the standard NATO fence.

2Shelter area

There is a small road south of the base that follows the base fence almost exactly. From this road (just follow the fence from position 1) you have a pretty decent view of the shelter area and are able to note the serials of the aircraft that are positioned in front of their shelters.

3West side approach runway 09

The approach that is used with easterly winds, runway 09, is OK too. Again, this can be reached by following the fence as closely as possible from position 1 or 2. You will eventually end up between the runway approach lighting of runway 09. This is a good position for both serials and pictures. From here, the instructional F-4E is also clearly visible.

Like said here, the approach of runway 27 at spot 1 is very nice. (Manolito Jaarsma)

Spot 3 also offers fine photography options, as shown by this blast of the past. (Jos Baptist)
