General

The sole remaining German navy base is located between Cuxhaven and Bremerhaven, close to the mound of the Elbe river into the Wadden Sea. The base is home to the maritime patrol fleet of the German Navy and its helicopters. Furthermore, part of it operates as the civilian Sea-Airport Cuxhaven-Nordholz and a small 'green' airfield with an individual status, Nordholz-Spieka, hugs the base fence in the northwest. To top it off, there is the Aeronauticum museum that focuses on the history of airships and German naval aviation. Nordholz offers several nice spots for photography, and noting down the serials is easy.

Layout

The base stretches out with housing areas north of the runway. There are height-differences on the base, so there is no clear overall view. The fixed-wing aircraft are mostly in the southwest corner, as well as in the northeast corner where the maintenance area is. The southeast is occupied by the helicopters parked in dispersals near their hangar. Just south of that, a small civil terminal can be found with a meanwhile respectable apron, used partly for airliner storage. Lastly, the grass strips of Spieka are in the northwest, a bit further from the main runway than before 2014, with some small hangars for light aviation.

Getting There

The base is located alongside the A27 motorway from Bremerhaven to Cuxhaven. From this Autobahn, take exit 3 Nordholz which is the one depicted on our map.

Around the Airport

This spot is 'the place to be' to spot the Lynx helicopters since their platform is very close to the civil airport. The spot gives a very nice view of the platform and the civil part of the base. Photography is limited to the ones passing by closely, but if they do, the shots are great! The position can be reached by continuing on the 'Pickerstrasse' (spot 2) for a couple of kilometres, until you end up in the town of Wanhöden. In this town, you turn left and continue the main road, K14. This under-passes the A27 highway again and the civil airport is signposted from here.

1Final approach runway 08

The first position that offers nice opportunities for pictures is the approach for runway 08. From the motorway exit mentioned above, follow the K14 to Nordholz. Just before a roundabout at the edge of the base, a small road branches off to the right. Parking is possible at its beginning, which is spot 1. For the best photo standpoint, you may want to walk along the main road towards the approach lights.

2MPA platform

From spot 1, drive back and take the first left, the Pickerstrasse. This leads you along the fence and a gate, where you can try and get what you came for.

3Sea-Airport

The civil area offers a parking lot, close to its own apron and just south of MFG5's main area (see next spot). To arrive here from the A27, drive via road K14 to and through Wanhöden. Less than 1km after the village, a sign points to the left for the airport. To get to the fence of the apron, pass the entrance to the parking lot and buildings and follow the right turn further on, bringing you onto the Otto-Liliental-Straße. Park along the track that folloows the tree line and walk the rest to the fence. For the duration of the renovation of Wittmundhafen, planned to be completed by late 2025, the Alpha Jets and A-4 Skyhawks of Top Aces operate from here.

4MFG5 and 26 approach

Where the entrance road to the civil airport reaches the base fence, one can walk along it and often even park along the road there. The edge of the field at the fence offers a great view on the beginning of runway 26 and aircraft approaching, it either in the air or on the ground here. Bring steps to take photos over the fence and respect the agricultural activities of course. For different views onto the helicopter platform and dispersals, move around the area between spots 4 and 3.

5North side runway 26

This spot is reached from the civil airport simply by returning to the main road, driving past the approach lights and then taking first left. It offers a view on landings from the east with great light on summer evenings. Continuing down the track along the fence brings more of the maintenance area in view, where you may spot or even photograph the odd Orion or helicopter.

6Museum

The Aeronauticum museum is located adjacent to the main base entrance. Several aircraft in the collection can be seen from outside, including the Sea Hawk at the parking lot, plus the Atlantic base gate guard opposite of it. The museum is easily reached from the roundabout at spot 1 by just taking the L135 into Wusterheide. There are signs as well leading the way.

7Nordholz/Spieka

Also reached from spot 1, but by following the small road along the fence, is this compact 'green' airfield that even has its own ICAO code: EDXN. The grass strips have been moved north of the buildings, to give the naval base a bit more room. There is a parking lot and at the aero club, some vintage aircraft with a military pedigree can be found in the hangars. You may also see a BN-2 Islander or similar here at Spieka.

Spot 4 offers a great view on landings on runway 26, as well as the taxiways at its beginning. (Frank Noort)

Another landing shot from spot 4, one of the remaining Lynxes over the beginning of the runway. (Patrick Dirksen)
