General

This northernmost German Air Force air base is home to the Tornados of TLG51. Tasked with the reconnaissance role, they operate from this former German navy base that is pretty OK for serials but not the best for photography. Schleswig played a major role in exercise Air Defender 2023.

Layout

The base is big but rather open. The runway is aligned from southwest to northeast. To the west and southeast there are two large shelter areas.

Getting There

The very easy way to get the air base is by using the A7 highway and exiting at Schleswig-Jagel.

Around the Airport

1Northeast side approach

The 23 approach is a very nice position to view the operations. The base can be overlooked from here (taxying aircraft, aircraft to and from the maintenance hangar near the main gate) and the aircraft approaching runway 23. Photography is not perfect and only applies to aircraft coming in for landing. You can reach this spot by exiting the A7 highway at the exit 'Schleswig/Jagel' and then use the B77 heading South (direction Jagel). After a very short while you will pass the main gate and just after that you can turn right towards the fence.

2Shelter area

For some extra serials, in case the aircraft are positioned in front of the shelters, you can view the southern shelter area. Continue on the B77 to Jagel. In Jagel turn right at the traffic lights (Bahnhofstrasse). You will end up near the shelter area.

3Southwest side approach

The 05 approach is officially not accessible but should offer good opportunities to take pictures of aircraft landing the 05 runway. The road leading here is marked as a 'government road'. You can get there by continuing the road you took to the shelter area (spot 2) and turning right after a while (signposted 'Klein Rheide'). This road makes a sharp turn to the right after which you pass a stone/sand quarry. You end up at a road crossing at which you have to give way to the crossing traffic. Turn right here and you are on the road. From here you could position yourself for pictures.

4West side threshold runway 05

This is a very nice spot to view the operations. The spot is at a crash gate of the base. Photography is not perfect since you are facing the sun. From here you have a great view of the runway, the approach and the north western shelter area. Even if they are operating runway 23 this position is OK for serials. You can reach this spot by crossing the road mentioned above (spot 3) and then turn right at the end.

TLG51, still flying Tornados, has its homebase at Schleswig-Jagel. Picture taken at spot 1 by Maurits Kraak.

Also seen from spot 1 was this Czech L159 in 2006. (Maurits Kraak)
