General

The airport of Stuttgart, formerly named after bordering village Echterdingen, is a relatively active airport. Many European carriers have connections to and from this airport. Additionally, the airport general aviation department is quite active and the place is visited by interesting bizjets and bizprops. Although is there is no more fixed military presence, US military aircraft and military VIP and transport aircraft of other countries still visit Sturrgart. The airport offers numerous great opportunities for photography and is worth visiting!

Layout

The airfield is compact; a lot is cramped in a relatively narrow east-west area. North of the runway, the civil terminal and ramp occupy a fair portion. In the northeast corner, the general aviation can be found. The military used to be on the southwest side but is now mainly a general aviation area, next to the cargo area that was built as an expansion in the first years of this century.

Getting There

Stuttgart Airport is located very close to the A8 motorway south of the city and the airport is signposted clearly. It has numerous connections to public transportation systems.

Around the Airport

1Fence opposite Real Markt

From the Real Markt you can walk to the fence nearby. Here you have a great view of the entire airport and this spot is very nice for photography. Aircraft taking off or landing can be shot (and read) from here. You can reach the market by using roadnumber B312, passing under the airport and exiting on your left just after you have come from 'under' the airport.

2South side fence opposite tower

Just across the road from the Real Markt you can position yourself opposite of the tower. This spot gives good photo opportunities as well that are just different to the ones from spot 1. You can walk from spot 1 to spot 2.

3South side fence - small hill

Walking from spot 2 to the threshold of runway 25, for about 15 to 20 minutes, you reach a small hill near a crash gate that offers nice opportunities for touchdown-shots of the aircraft. By car, you can reach this spot by taking the first farmland road west of the roundabout were the L1209 meets the K1225/Bahnhofstrasse. Keep right at the four-way 'junction' and you will reach the fence.

4East side approach

The approach of runway 25 is accessible as well. Either by walking ahead from spot 3 or parking your car nearby. From spot 1 at the Real Markt take the B312 through the airport tunnel, and after passing the tunnel turn right, continue straight on. Do not take the first right, you will then enter the highway! Go right onto the L1204 towards Ostfildern-Scharnhausen. After 2km turn left onto the B1269/Elly Beinhorn strasse, and after 200m turn left 180° onto the parallel road and pass underneath the highway. You can park your car and walk towards the fence. Alternatively, work your way east on the farmland roads from spot 3 or go west opposite the industrial estate Neuhausen-West, were the L1204 meets the road. From here you can chose several positions to take pictures (depending on the sun and your personal views).

5Taxiway

This spot is not reached easily. From the Real Markt (spot 1) you can walk the airport tunnel to the North. Just after exiting the tunnel there is a wall with a lot of shrubbery on your right. If you work your way up past the shrubbery, you will end up above the wall and have a good view of the taxiway. This position offers nice opportunities to photograph the aircraft later in the afternoon and at sunset.

6General aviation

The General Aviation area offers a great spot for photography of the GA-traffic up close. You have to take pics through the fence, though. To get here, you walk the airport tunnel again and turn left after exiting it. You pass the fire department and after that you end up at the entrance for the GA-area. Obviously, you can get here by car also, but the parking lot is for members only and on foot you can just walk past the barrier!

7Viewing area

The viewing area is located in Terminal 3. It is a very nice spot to photograph the aircraft, especially during the late afternoon and during the evening. It is also here that you will find the three preserved smaller aircraft. The terrace is open from April to September between 08:00 and 21:00 and closes at 18:00 from October to March. The entrance is free nowadays.

8Parking 2

This is the parking garage on the west side of the terminal area. Fro a quick hit-and-run, drive all the way to the roof for a distant but clear view of the south side ramps.

9West side approach

To photograph landing aircraft during the second half of the day, you can visit spot 9. To get there, follow the directions for Parkplatz P0 from the terminal. From the parking, you walk ahead and turn left towards the runway. By car, you will have to venture into the farmland roads accessible from the L1208 on the southwest side, so do not go on the B27 because you can not get off!
