This German Air Force base is located in the north of Germany, west of the city of Wittmund. It houses JG71, flying the Eurofighter since the retirement of the last F-4Fs in June 2013, and a detachment of A-4 Skyhawks. In 2004, Flight Systems was replaced by Discovery Air Defence Systems as the contractor to operate this type at Wittmundhafen, and brought in its own aircraft. Due to its small surface area, the base offers great spotting and photography opportunities. The erection of a new fence during 2008, enclosing a rectangular area south of the runway, changed things for the worse a little, but fortunately not too much. Officially, photography is prohibited at least at certain locations along the fence, but enforcement is mild.
Due to extensive renovation works, Wittmundhafen is closed except for occasional approaches from Janary 2022 until late 2025. TLG71 operates mainly from Laage during this period and Top Aces from Nordholz.
As mentioned, the base occupies a minimum of space apart from the southern extension, putting its runway still partly right along the southern perimeter fence. The newer fence construction - replacing the older one all along! - is higher than the previous one. The mesh goes up to some 2 meters above the ground and there is barbed wire above that. The barracks and shelter areas are bordered by the through-road on the north side.
The easiest way to drive to Wittmund is via the B210 that connects Emden with Wilhelmshaven: the base is right along this road. The B210 can be accessed from the A31 near Emden and the A31 near Wilhelmshaven, or alternatively via the B436 and B72 from the A28 between Leer and Oldenburg. The field lies between the towns of Aurich and Wittmund.
Photography is great at Wittmund and A-4s in attractive liveries are still operating from here. (Patrice Dochain, spot 5)
