General

This German Air Force base is located in the north of Germany, west of the city of Wittmund. It houses JG71, flying the Eurofighter since the retirement of the last F-4Fs in June 2013, and a detachment of A-4 Skyhawks. In 2004, Flight Systems was replaced by Discovery Air Defence Systems as the contractor to operate this type at Wittmundhafen, and brought in its own aircraft. Due to its small surface area, the base offers great spotting and photography opportunities. The erection of a new fence during 2008, enclosing a rectangular area south of the runway, changed things for the worse a little, but fortunately not too much. Officially, photography is prohibited at least at certain locations along the fence, but enforcement is mild.

Due to extensive renovation works, Wittmundhafen is closed except for occasional approaches from Janary 2022 until late 2025. TLG71 operates mainly from Laage during this period and Top Aces from Nordholz.

Layout

As mentioned, the base occupies a minimum of space apart from the southern extension, putting its runway still partly right along the southern perimeter fence. The newer fence construction - replacing the older one all along! - is higher than the previous one. The mesh goes up to some 2 meters above the ground and there is barbed wire above that. The barracks and shelter areas are bordered by the through-road on the north side.

Getting There

The easiest way to drive to Wittmund is via the B210 that connects Emden with Wilhelmshaven: the base is right along this road. The B210 can be accessed from the A31 near Emden and the A31 near Wilhelmshaven, or alternatively via the B436 and B72 from the A28 between Leer and Oldenburg. The field lies between the towns of Aurich and Wittmund.

Around the Airport

1Alter Postweg

A quieter alternative to spot 2 is this location. When coming from the B210, turn left onto the Alter Postweg when entering Heglitz. Near the approach lights you see a dirt road to the left. If you enter this road you are able to position yourself out of sight.

2Eastern approach

The 26 approach is easily accessible. While driving the B210 from Aurich to Wittmund you pass the air base (on your right side). After passing the base turn right heading for Ardorf/Brockzetel. The approach lights show up and you can position yourself at liking. A parking space is at hand. Both reading serials and taking pictures is OK from this spot.

3South side 26

There is a choice of positions along the runway here, accessible on foot from the Wehler Weg. Steps needed to shoot photos over the fence! Between the marks 2 and 3 on our map, the embankment is elevated some 5 meters, providing great photo opportunities for line-up and landing shots when runway 26 is in use, or drag chute shots when landing from the other side. This embankment is reached a little quicker from the parking lot near spot 2 than from the Wehler Weg.

4Near midfield

To poll some addtional numbers of aircraft in the shelter areas, visiting this spot sometimes helps. To get here, park along the northern branch of the Wehler Weg and walk the track between the fields to the shrubberies at the fence. Next to those, you will be able to study the other side of the field.

5Holding 08

Here, great opportunities exist to shoot aircraft on touchdown and line-up. You can make do with 100mm (and up) when 08 is in use! The most direct approach from the B210 is via the Osterlooger Strasse, the first turn-off after the base when driving from Wittmund to Aurich. Take the first left again to 'An der Hochkant' in Middels-Osterloog. At the junction of five small roads, take the S-turn to continue more or less straight ahead via 'Im Osterloog'. At the next crossing, turn left onto 'Zum Hasenholt' and left again at the junction after some 200m, onto the road that looks like a house's driveway (careful please). This one-track road leads to the rough track that brings you to spot 5. Do not park too close to the fence and do bring steps if photography is your goal.

6Western approach

The 08 approach is reachable as well. Start off like for spot 5, but take a sharp left to the north at the crossing with five roads (or straight ahead when repositioning from spot 5). Following the pavement as long as possible brings you close to the fence between the approach lights of 08. Position can be taken for all directions of sunlight. Alternatively, enter the first unpaved track to the left after the five-way junction to reach the beginning of the approach lights. The planes are higher here, but the observer is out of sight of the base.

7Shelter area

Since the base is close to the B210 (from Aurich to Wittmund) you can view some parts of the shelter area. If aircraft are parked outside (EF2000s of TLG71) they can be seen and read from this road. Photography is not an option.

Photography is great at Wittmund and A-4s in attractive liveries are still operating from here. (Patrice Dochain, spot 5)
