General

Dübendorf is the famous fighter base of yesteryear. It is renowned for its Flugmeisterschaften, which were held until the early nineties. With the F-5s gone and the more recent transfer of Staffel 11's Hornets to Meiringen, the fighter days are over. Still, helicopters can be found here as well as the excellent air force museum. Lastly, some VIP and cartographic aircraft are based here.

Layout

The airfield used to be the civil airport of Zürich and has a semi-circular taxiway lined with hangars on the west, northwest and north side. The main runway is east-west and the helicopters are on the north side whereas the fixed wing aircraft are near the north-western threshold. The runway extends to the east and the museum is on the south side.

Getting There

By car

The airfield is near the crossing of highway 1/4 and 53. Take the 53 southbound and use exit 2 Wangen-Brüttisellen. Go left onto the Weidstrasse and you will be on the north side of the airfield.

By public transport

The very efficient Swiss railway system takes you to Dübendorf Bahnhof (railway station) several times per hour. Moreover, many buses run there as well. From there, take the northern exit and make a right on the roundabout, the Ueberlandstrasse. Follow this for about 700 metres and you will see the pole-mounted Vampire on the other side of the road.

Around the Airport

1FLAB Museum

The museum merits a visit on its own. From there, the activity on the runway can be viewed and the helicopters can be spotted on the other side of the runway.

2North side ramp view - Skyguide

Following the airfield clockwise taking the Wangenstrasse, will bring you past the western threshold. When this bends left go straight into the Dübendorfstrasse. With some luck you can already spot some aircraft from that point. Continue on this road, bending right onto the parking lot of Skyguide, the Swiss civil aviation authority. Go right between the first and second section of the parking lot. From the far southern corner, next to a building, you can reach the fence for a clear view.

3North side ramp view

Go back to the Wangenstrasse and make a right, this is now the Weidestrasse. Cross the highway and ignore the entrances to it. After that, make a right into the Brüttisellenstrasse. After crossing the Dübendorfstrasse, make a right when the road bends left, this should be the Zelglistrasse. At the T-junction, go right over the highway again. After that, the road bends left and you will have to go in the corner of the fence for a ramp view. Drive to the end, there is a crash gate that offers some views of the ramps from another angle. You can also watch the traffic on the runway but you are against the light and on a spot you can not stay long because it is near a private property.
Alternatively, from spot 2 you can probably also cross the highway directly on the Dübendorfstrasse, in which case you have to make a right after passing the highway.

4North side taxiway and runway

Another spot on the north side can be reached as well. Go back over the highway and make a right, this is now the Hegnaustrasse. After 150m go right in a small street, called Pünten, and left again. This road, Roswiss, runs parallel to the highway and you can cross it again. Then you will be on a road that follows the perimeter fence. There is a crash gate where it meets the fence, but there are several other spots albeit with the same vice, you are looking into the sun.

5Southeast side approach

The sweetest spot for photography is spot 5. You can either continue clockwise from spot 4 or follow the Ueberlandstrasse towards Hegnau from spot 1. The road you should end up on is called Büelstrasse which is parallel to the runway and very near the threshold of runway 29. The hill side forests provide a suitable background.

6Rega helicopter base

From spot 5, go to the Ueberlandstrasse and make a right. The airfield is still on your right hand side. At the roundabout, go right and immediately left, You are now driving between the base and the main road. Just past the Rega helicopter hangar there is a crash gate and if the helicopter is outside, you should be able to spot it.

7Distant view of ramps - Wangen

As always in mountainous Switzerland there is bound to be a hill in the vicinity that provides an overview of the base. Dübendorf is no exception. From exit 2, take the Weidestrasse right and right again at the Brüttisellenstrasse. After a shallow s-turn you will pass some houses. Just before the road bends left to meet the Hegnaustrasse, you can see the base on the right hand side. The street is called Im Oberdorf and it even has a bus stop. Distance to the ramps is about 1 km from here. Obviously, there should be more vantage points in this area.

The REGA helicopter can be photographed from spot 6. (Michiel van Herten)
