General

The airport of Emmen is not as open as most of the other Swiss military airfields as it is mostly properly fenced. However, the spots are very good for spotting and photography. Also some nice units with a diversity of aircraft are located on this base, but do not expect much jet traffic.

Layout

The airport has the RUAG factory on the south side and the military apron at the north side, with the runway inbetween. There is a large fence around the base, but at the spots there are plenty possibilities to spot unobstructed and without the need of some steps.

Getting There

The airport is located quite close to the highway A14 from Luzern to Cham. Take the exit to Emmen-Süd and follow the signs to Emmen-Süd until you arrive at a crossing with traffic lights. Go right here, following the signs to Zürich indicated in blue. You will enter the Seetalstrasse which is the main route to all spots.

Around the Airport

1West side approach

From the Seetalstrasse, take the exit to the left, onto the Kirchfledstrasse, this has a sign to the airport. The road crosses the runway and is equipped with a barrier. To the right are some garden allotments with a parking space next to the road. Park here and position yourself close to the runway and the taxi tracks.

2West side - taxi track

When crossing the runway, there is a parking at your left. From here, you will have a good view of the taxi track coming from the military apron. However, you will need a step. For photography, this spot is best in the afternoon.

3Patrouille Suisse

This is the official spot for visiting Emmen, home of the Patrouille Suisse. It can be reached by taking the first right on the roundabout after leaving the Kirchfeldstrasse. This is the Rüeggisingerstrasse and it will lead to a parking lot with a preserved Hunter. It will give you a nice view into the back end of the hangars of the Patrouille Suisse. Also, an elevated platform will give you a view of the ramps and the runway, but for photography you will have backlight.

4Main Gate

If you leave the parking spot and continue along the road, you will see some buildings and a hangar. On the platform, the aircraft of the BFWM can sometimes be seen.

5East side approach

Just follow the Rüeggisingerstrasse or the Seetalstrasse at the crossing with the end of the runway. Park your car on the small road to the south and position yourself for the landing aircraft. Spotting on the runway is possible.

6Bicycle track

There is a bicycle track crossing the runway in the west. The fence is interrupted and equipped with a barrier. The spot can be reached from spot 1 by following the fence.

7Along the Seetalstrasse

Along the Seetalstrasse itself you will have a good view onto the Emmen aprons. The best spot is at the northerly corner of the Milchhof Personalhaus buildings. From here you can spot all aircraft at the aprons and sometimes also into the hangars.
