General

Originally built in 1933 as a Civil Aeronautics Administration beacon site to help pilots navigate, long before the advent of modern aids such as GPS, it ranks as the oldest of the six airports currently operated by San Bernardino County. Just prior to World War II, the Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA) selected the site as an important civil air field and negotiated a agreement with the county of San Bernardino to maintain the air field. Shortly thereafter, the site was chosen by the War Department as a Modification Center. The site was classified as surplus on 15 November 1945. Today the US Army has based several helicopters and is operating under the Fort Irwin National Training Center aviation company which is based on Fort Irwin.

Layout

This airport has two runways; a W-E runway on the south side and a SW-NE runway crossing at the SW end. All aprons are to the north of these runways. The east apron is used by the US Army.

Getting There

Barstow-Daggett is north of the Interstate 40. Take exit 12 to Hidden Springs Road and drive to the north to arrive near the airport.

Around the Airport

1Spotting from the south

Driving on Hidden Springs Road to the North, you pass the well-known Highway 66 and a railroad. Directly after this, take a right onto the dirt road called Santa Fe Street. Drive to the end and spot all helicopters on the apron.
You could drive up to the fence, but the Military Police is not very happy with this of course.

2Spotting from the south, more safely.

Driving on Hidden Springs Road, take the first right onto Route 66! Leave the road to the left at a convenient moment and drive to the railroad. Positioning yourself to spot all helicopters on the apron from a safer distance.

3Spotting from the north

Continue on Hidden Springs Road, pass the exit towards the airport and continue on the dirt road. Take a right onto another dirt road called Silver Valley Road. Stop abeam the apron and spot the helicopters. This is best in the early morning or late afternoon.

4Terminal

On Hidden Springs Road, continue the tarmac road with a right turn towards the Airport Terminal. You will pass a gate which is mostly open without warning signs. Take a left turn, then a right turn and arrive at the very small terminal. Here you have a good view onto any operations on the field, or visitors.
From the terminal you could drive further on along the US Army fence towards the US Army apron via the northerly dirt roads but this is not really appreciated by the US Army and you could be detained for information.
